NEVER put dung from meat eating animals in your compost/plants!
If you have the space to make a second compost bin and the plants that can use it dog crap compost works just fine for non food bearing plants like rhododendrons, roses, and ornamental shrubs. You just really don't want to use it in places where you mess with the ground a lot or eat out of that spot.
In order to safely use dog waste, you need to ensure the interior of the compost pile reaches 160 or above for at least 5 consecutive days... this is difficult to ensure for the interior of the pile, let alone the outter edges. If these temperatures are not present, parasites and their eggs will be alive and well in the soil. If one can ensure the pile reaches those tempertures for a minimum of five days, you are correct, it would then be safe to handle.
Generally, waste from animals which consume meat and any fat/grease by products are not recommended for the standard backyard compost pile... jme
I have used ground poop composters in the past which liquify the waste below grade... before feeding raw. Now my dog's poop is white and hard and crunches into the ground after a day.

Here is a little tip or 2 a friend taught me for checking the done-ness of compost.
Best is to try getting seeds to germinate in the compost.
If you don't have that kind of time, take some of the compost in question and put it in a sealed plastic container for 3 days. On the third day, open the container and take a big whiff. If you smell ANYTHING rotten, it aren't done.

I LOVE that smell. Love it. (My son used to call me "worm woman" because I was so into my composting... ) The longer you compost, you'll "know" when it is ready.

Yes I did know that. We go night worm picking in my moms compost pile She gets a tad testy about it because those are her "big" eaters hehe. But the fish love them too.. and she loves fish. Its a fair trade off.
I can't wait, and I am totally envious of any one who lives in a bit warmer climate that can start their gardens! Gr! I love playing in the dirt, now I need to really get a pair of gardening gloves though. I have just been using soap and water to clean up but I believe I do need gloves.
I must have 12 pairs of gardening gloves, and do use them in the fall and winter when working in the yard or if planting anything with thorns, but as it warms up, I just don't feel I'm really gardening if my hands aren't in the soil. I'll start out with them on, but eventually they end up getting ripped off. (Not very good on the nails, but it feels so much better!)

I ordered mine from this company. It is kept in the garage. My sister in law tried one in her utility room but ended up with either fruit flies or some other critter which resulted in it being moved outdoors...
