Yes, BUT all HW meds are from the same class of drugs so technically they all carry the same risk - this thread was put together by a research chemist it is written with Border Collies in mind, but has a lot of good info for any dog owner about HW preventatives Which Heartworm Preventative is safe for my Border Collie?
Part two there is testing available to see if your dog carries the gene that causes sensitivity Test your dog for the mutant MDR1 gene The test is simple and costs $70
And part three - Interceptor is the same drug as you're giving now at about 1/2 the price. You don't get the whatever flea drug is in Sentinel, but that stuff doesn't kill the fleas and doesn't do anything unless they bite your dog.
If I understood it correctly, the dosage for dogs is simply too low to cause toxic reactions, even in dogs that have the gene mutation that causes sensitivity to the drugs. So basically any of the HW meds are ok.
I was thinking of switchng to Interceptor this year since fleas don't don't seem to be prevalent in my area...
Yup. The dose used for HW prevention is pretty low. and since they're all in the same class of drug, they all carry the same risk. Now if your dog was sensitive and ate a whole pack all at once, not good. But in everything I've ever read (that article, even the little inserts in the HW meds box) the dose in preventatives have never caused an issue.
Probably something good to talk to your vet about, but I've never seen any research to point to anything different than that.
There's so much goose poo in my yard its totally impossible to keep the dogs away from it. We just try to make sure they get their wormings and try not to let them go toooooo crazy!
We have wild bunnies around our yard and my dogs (OK, mostly JD) manage to find and eat bunny poop occasionally and it's never caused a problem for them.
The only nutrient I know for sure they are getting from it is the roughage from my Tulips they ate!!!! Dagnab wabbits!
