I hadn't considered counterfeit drugs being an issue, hmm. I ordered from Foster and Smith and SmartPak, places I also order pet medications from, so I sure hope they're trustworthy.

Last time I went to Costco it was $35 for any size of Frontline plus. I usually just get the largest size and use a syringe to measure and divide it based on weight among my dogs.
Has anyone used generic brands instead of the Advantix or Frontline? I've used one from the local farm store that has Phenothrin and Methoprene. Are these the same active ingredients as the brand names?

Okay, here's a new one (for me). After 4 months of using the Advantix topical--every month like clockwork--last week we had a new outbreak of fleas!
So I take three itchy dogs to the vet (I had an appointment anyway for one of them...the others came along for a "would you take a look at this, pretty please...") Yup. Fleas. Again.
So here's what my vet said: many of the OTC topicals are no longer effective for a month. Flea populations are building up immunity to the ingredients. For them to be effective, (vet says), you actually have to use them every two weeks!
Instead, she recommended Comfortis, a monthly chewable. So we've switched to that. One dose, fleas gone. Then the whole rigamarole of washing bedding, couch covers, etc.
Anybody else had issues with fleas showing up--EVEN THOUGH YOU WERE USING THE DAMNED FLEA MEDS AS LABELED. >?!

Thank you Tracy, for (along with other info) underlining something we try so hard to get across so often here:
There are classic signs of fleas that should make the owner think "fleas!" and NOT "It can't be fleas because I'm using monthly Whatever; it can't be fleas because I never see any; it can't be fleas because I am not being bitten; it can't be fleas because only one of the dogs is going crazy with itching."
Not a single one of those rationales holds up in the World of Fleas.
I haven't had a problem myself (I'm knocking on wood here!), but apparently, Tracy, you're not the only one. Here's a link to the weekly blog I received just today from Whole Dog Journal.
This same thing happened to me when I first adopted Ollie. He had fleas all over him in spite of the fact that I used Frontline on him. I started him on Comfortis last summer and never had another issue with them. Do make sure you feed them first. I forgot this once and it upset his tummy.
