I believe that in this day, people on any diet (including the Paleo diet) would do well to be careful about getting a good balance of Omega 6s to Omega 3s. Paleo people were not eating grain-fed (or grain-finished) slaughter animals for their meat.
I just felt I needed to add that although grass fed does contain more omega 3s, it is not a significant ammount. Only about 30 mg when the daily recomendation is above 2,000 mg. Also, the ratio between 6's and 3's favors the grain fed. I support choice 100%, but being a farm wife, I feel the need to add facts when I can. Anyone with other farm animal/meat/dairy questions, feel free to ask. I love to talk shop
I missed this the first time around! (I see Connie quoted this, too.) How does grain fed promote a better 6:3 ratio, Amy?
An ideal ration of 6:3 is less than 5:1. (in a perfect world, it'd be 2:1) Typical SAD diet may be as high as 20:1...
And now I'm off to take my fish oil...

I am really really trying to not eat processed food, or instant rice or dinners in a bag type things.
People now adays really rely on those products way too much.
Instant mashed Potatoe's??? Really?
"oh but they're GARLIC Mashes potatoes!"
Uhhhh, yeah? Boil potatoes, add in some garlic powder or minced garlic when you are mashing them and Voila! Same thing waaaaaaaaay healthier than what you pour out of a bag.
Case in point, I made Scalloped potatoes this weekend.
Someone: These are good, who made them?
Me: I did.
Someone: No I mean which kind are they?
Me: Kind? they're scalloped potatoes, thats what kind.
Someone: No I mean which kind? Lipton, Betty Crocker?
This person couldn't believe I actually peeled the potatoes and cooked this myself when I could've just opened up a bag and
added milk.
I would love to try that diet where you can't eat anything that isn't grown or raised more 100 km's from where you live.
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

That's really funny, but oh so true these days. I also avoid the processed and preserved versions of "real" foods. Real potatoes, long-cooking rice, long-cooking oatmeal. I know it's out of fashion these days, but I still make as much as possible "from scratch." Food just tastes so much better that way.
Back when Jamie Oliver first came out with that TV show "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution," I was blown away by an episode where he was talking to school children, and all of them said how much they liked French fries and ate them almost every day, but when Jamie held up an actual potato and other examples of vegetables in their natural states, most of the kids did not know what they were. What a sad commentary on the state of nutrition in our country.

I took about 10 years to stay at home with my kids before returning to the work force out of necessity. At that time, I lived in California, and it was SOOOOO easy to eat well there. Now, back in WV, there's not as many grocers that offer natural or organic foods at an affordable price, but I still try really hard to stay away from processed foods. My kids always acted like I was abusing them for not allowing soda, candy, chips...ect...in the house. But the funny thing is, now that they are getting older, they see the difference. They go to a friends house for a weekend and come back with diarrhea or crashing from sugar. Don't get me wrong, we have our treats, but as a whole, we don't eat junk...and never fast food. I do think it's so much harder when you work and then have a good hour minimum of cooking when you get home.
I don't know much about the paleo diet, but I bet it would be hard to follow in my area...short of being independantly wealthy.

I'm on day three now. Not by the book paleo, since I'm still having coffee and milk. However, I have to say that I'm feeling a lot better already.
Its kind of amazing, but some long term skin problems I have had are clearing up! Definitely have a little more energy in the morning, too.
Other than a little belly ache yesterday from eating brussel sprouts for breakfast, its been really easy so far.
My past low carb attempts haven't worked out for me because of avoiding fruit, it always led to headaches and serious mood problems to not have any carbs at all, but I have to say that so far this is pretty liveable.

Lauren, I found that tapering down on carbs (as opposed to cold-turkey) worked pretty well for me; it helped me to avoid some of the pitfalls that can accompany a low-carb, paleo-type diet.
The hardest was figuring out what to do for breakfast; I used to be an avid cereal eater (bran-type cereals). I haven't had a bowl of cereal in 18 months! Now, most of the time I do full-fat, plain yogurt with a handful of berries tossed in...

Breakfast isn't hard for me. I actually like meat and veggies at breakfast. As much as brussel sprouts in the a.m. probably sounds like torture for some people, I love it.
So far its condiments that have been the hard one. For example, I have never in my life eaten a burger that wasn't drowned in ketchup. I love steak sauce and mayo, too.
Salad dressing isn't a big problem because I like to make my own, but I will miss some of the sweet ones for sure.

Yeah, my one attempt to make my own mayo was not pretty...
I haven't given up ketchup entirely, but I buy organic ketchup that doesn't have HFCS. Or alternatively I make a spicy salsa from tomatoes and jalapenos that can sub for ketchup if needed... (my husband is Mexican, so there is almost always homemade salsa in the house)
