Building on the excellent advice that Mara, Aaron etc have given.
If you are single, here are a couple of things that you need to consider before getting a working dog:
After a day of work/school when your friends go out in the evenings you will be busy exercising your dog's mind/body.
Your social schedule will need to revolve around your dog(s) well-being before it revolves around you.
Vacations where you leave the dogs will be significantly reduced due to boarding concerns. These are not dogs that go to doggie daycare.
These are just a few off the top of my head. Yes, as many people on this board have shown, living with a working dog (even multiple ones to boot) can be done successfully. I went through graduate school in a 600 sq. foot, one bed room duplex with no yard and two to three ACDs.
Needless to say, when I was not in class or studying I was with my dogs. No going to the bars after class, no weekend jaunts skiing etc. My obligation laid with the dogs I chose to share my life with. My life is not much different now. Insert work instead of school and you have my life in a nutshell. Would not trade it for all the tea in China though :-)
I always think it's interesting when I see these sorts of threads or articles. I do all of this with my adult dogs, and they are not even close to what Radar will be when he's mature. I figure if I'm already doing it now, with low key, laid back house pets then why not?
All things mentioned are why I can admire many breeds of dogs, but know I am not the right owner for them, and I can admire the people who train working dogs, but know I am not going to be that person (not while I have children at home).
Are you willing to realize that you have been slacking a bit (work and school demands unfortunately) and that is why your pup is acting like a jerk? Blaming yourself instead of the dog is not always an easy thing to do.
