We are back from the vet. He said, "That looks awful!" He was referring to the bite, not the repair job : ) He drizzled water over the eye and washed out all the mucky yuck and Skipper can open the eye now. He gave us instructions on how to wash out the eye and gave us antibiotic eye drops to put in after we give it a rinse. He thinks it is going to heal up fine. I am so mad at the dog owner that is not making any effort to find us and make amends for the bite.
Good thing you had the vet check him out again. I really feel for you and poor Skipper.
Skipper sounds like he is a great dog Jenny, doing his best to heal and carry on with his life. It seems like many dogs are so resilient to many things. I truly hope that when he has healed physically that he will also heal mentally too from such a horrible ordeal.
I am also sorry that no word has been had from the owners of the attacking dog. I wish every owner could be as stand up and decent as the owners on this forum. It is a crying shame that there are still so many who are clueless or just don't give a damn!
Just know I continue to think of you guys and wish for a full recovery for Skipper. He sure sounds like a wonderful dog.

Skipper squirmed a bit while the vet dribbled water over his eye. The vet says, that's gotta hurt! What a great dog you have. Most dogs wouldn't let me do that."
There was a discussion earlier about the relative value of starting with a fresh puppy or adopting an older dog. Skipper is the poster dog for later in life adoptions. He's helping jethro settle down and he is a wonderful companion.

Thank you for your good wishes.
Skipper's wounds are healing nicely, but now I see we also have to treat his psychological injuries. For the first time since we have had him, Skipper's hackles went up when a strange dog was coming down the sidewalk while he was out to pee this morning. I moved him far enough away that he wasn't reacting anymore, but...
I know, right now, he is under exercised because the instructions from the emergency vet were that he could not run for a week. He has been getting up to longer walks and he is off the pain meds (which had a sedating effect).
He doesn't seem to be in pain, except, of course, for direct contact to the wound. I see desensitizing, OB, and management in Skipper's future.
Any special instructions for helping a dog recover from a bite incident? I'm starting to notice tell tale signs Skipper gives before giving a growl, such as baring his teeth by wrinkly his nose.
