Yes, that is correct Dave. Try this today: You say sit - the dog waits - you say nope - the dog sits. DON'T reward. But he is now sitting, and that IS what you asked for, however he did it AFTER the nope. So what now? (Assuming he doesn't yet do a stand from a sit): I'd get him to move - step a few paces away from him, call him to you and ask for the sit again. If he doesn't sit until after the nope - repeat. You have got to mark ONLY when he sits when asked and before the nope. Be sure you are using a really yummy treat as you work to fix this; we don't want him zoning out if he gets momentarily confused since this behavior has worked in the past, it is going to take calmness on your part and great rewards to help him rethink and figure out "what is he really asking me to do here??" Keep in mind you are trying to clarify it in his mind - step by step.

Jumping to the conclusion that "dog complies after 'nope' = dog is confused" was boneheaded, leading to lots more confusion and unprecedented font sizes in this thread. I'll admit to being confused by a lot of what followed. Next time I post something stupid (and I'm sure I will), let's try the same tactic with me. Call me by name: "Tracy, nope." And in addition to "unprecedented font sizes" the other thing that is unprecedented, at least lately, is three people in one thread making a humble, good-natured apology, whether they needed to or not. Dave, even though I jumped in here with a good clip, I thought about it and talked off the board about it, and realized that I don't know anything here: How old is this puppy? How long have you and your puppy been marker training? It would be great if someone could film even the shortest clip of you doing marker work with the dog. .. one bit with a long-known behavior and then one you have just started recently. Cindy is working with Rush in that clip, and Rush is no newcomer to marker training. Neither is Cindy.
