I am sure that both Ed and Cindy have said that. And for 90% of pet owners it is true. Most owner don't have enough control to call their dogs off of sniffing a tree much less a running bunny! For those people and their dogs it is best. Many others say never let a dog ever aggress on a human and never play tug of war with a Rottie. For many this is good advice.
However, for some people and some dogs, the rules can be bent and broken even. I don't like dog parks and tell people to stay away from them in almost all circumstances. I have a dog that has zero tolerance for other dogs in his face. I take him to the dog park. Not to socialize, but to work on OB under extreme distraction. He wears an e-collar and is ubber well trained. For him, and I, in this situation, the rules are bent. I wouldn't take my other dog. His OB is nowhere near good enough to attempt this. For him the rules stand.
If the OP can call his dog off when needed, and is comfortable with the practice, and it does not cause issues for his dog, then in this situation the rules can be bent.
He has regular health checks, his vet loves him as he is friendly with the staff, very obedient to my commands and is obnoxiously healthy (according to the vet). Never found tape-worms or any GI tract issues!
Did he end up eating it? My dog brings the spoils of the hunt back to me GROSS! And then when I do not accept his offering with open arms; he buries it. I don't think it has ever occured to him to eat it.
