My stick is pretty small, compact, and is of the .45acp caliber.
lol, I've gone to a 10mm due to the amount of hostile wildlife that I encounter nowadays.
And I'd like to link here to a Youtube from one of the classic shooting schools "Thunder Ranch - see what a well trained person can do with virtually any weapon that he picks up:

I really want a walking stick. ...
I have "almost" acquired one several times. (Big help that would be when I needed it, huh?)
Now, I AM getting one.
Connie - the store that you get your gloves from probably sell things like riding crops....I'm just sayin'.....

We had an incident, here in the 'hood before I move in. Somebody couldn't keep their Dobies contained and they would harras excercisers and other pedestrians, somebody got bite and now everybody is carrying "walking sticks" They were really concerned when I showed up with my puppies. I got one phone call about my dog(s). The nieghbor said "Erika" was loose. I ran to the back yard and all mine were there. There is only ONE person in the neighborhood with a dog that resembles mine and he is a K9 officer. He denied his dual purpose dog getting loose. sure... everybody has a sable DDR/Czech 'round here.

10mm is a fantastic option.

These news stories disturb me on so many levels. First, I applaud the gun owner for being responsible and protecting himself and his dog. I don't care what the "turd" (good word btw) with the facial punctures thinks his dogs were doing. Most people are complete idiots.
I have also encountered "scary" dogs racing up to my on-leash pup (and then later, dog). The ones I have encountered, including two rottweilers, ran away shaking after just a little verbal abuse and correct body language. If they hadn't, out would come the pepper spray, and then the gun. PERIOD. I will not stand by and let some wild beast harm me or my dog. I consider it my duty as a dog owner (and really, a person) who could be in harm's way at any time because of some random sh*thead, to be prepared to defend in the most serious way.
I would love a pitbull that I own, but I have reason to find any other pitbull (any dog, really, but pits are strong) suspect because I don't trust other people.

Idiots like that is what gives pits a bad rap, maybe shoulda put one in him? but saying that guys life's in danger in a dog fight just seems to me to be a little bit of a stretch. Dog in danger yes, guy doubt it unless he puts his hands in the middle and like others have said, 3 savage pitbulls and there hardly seems any damage to the other dog how bad could they have been?? Need to start licensing owners and not dogs!

I've seen nearly the same situation play out at our nearby park, with a large staffy, (Ok, he was HUGE) and a GSD mix. Only difference was a 8'' blade was pulled, and close to the fight before an off duty officer arrived with his CC weapon. Luckily no shots were fired, and no dogs slashed. (owner was able to pry off the staffy, somehow. Several people were -stupidly- kicking the dog in the guts, head, etc) I would have preferred to see a gun in well trained hands ANY DAY over a knife like that in a public park with children present. That day, my whole family was there. My 6yr old saw that fight before I got Richard to take him far far away while I supervised from a distance, waiting to see if a dog, or person would need medical assistance once things calmed down.
Off leash dogs are dangerous. Period. Dog parks, public parks, sidewalks. It's scary, the utter lack of control that most dogs live under.

Three out-of-control powerful dogs by definition is a threat to a person's life, it's happened all over the country. I would not wait for my own throat to get torn to start defending myself.
