I wouldn't let a groomer express Cicero,.... JMO though. Groom shops express glads externally, which is no where near as effective as an internal gland expression. (This is coming from a vet tech, who's currently working as a groomer. )
I'd say once a month, at the vets, for a dog who's had infected/abscessed glands in the past would be a safe bet.
Back from the vet and as I suspected he was infected again so on meds again. The girl that does it for me is the intake worker at the rescue I foster for and from what I saw she expressed internally. From what I could tell it looked the same to me. Spoke with the vet about it today and she said to have my friend do it at least once a month and keep an eye on the color of the discharge and as long as it wasn't a green pussy color we are good. She did mention that if he kept having problems they might need to be flushed out which would likely require sedation.

Here's some info (although we have had better detail here, which I can't find):
http://www.askavetquestion.com/analglands.php (has a video and also cautions about external expression: "External vs. Internal expression of anal glands: Most groomers who express anal glands will do so externally. I don't recommend this because usually the entire gland is not emptied. Instead, we will talk about the more effective way of emptying anal glands.")
Here's some info (although we have had better detail here, which I can't find):
Not sure if this is the one but I learnt one heck of a lot from this thread. Some really great information from quite a few people especially Dr. Betty.

I'm going to take Jethro in to get checked. We have been noticing that his crate room smells bad in the morning. I wonder if he has an impacted anal gland. He is definitely scooting, sometimes more than others. His bowel movements are mostly normal, but sometimes they are loose at the end. Eating bones definitely gives him the best poops.
