Does the breeder live close?
Will the dog be living with her while it's shone?
Is the breeder going to be doing the handling?
Local shows only or lots of travel?
Is your dog going to be in the ring to win CH points for itself or just to help build points on another dog? (This one will piss off your breeder when you ask)
Show dogs live a life on the road. Weekends at the very least.
Often time the owner is that in name only till the dog finishes. Then IF it shows really well and specials then you may not see it much for a couple of yrs.
I showed and finished all my own dogs because I enjoyed it. I finished 5 CHs on 4 different breeds and also did a bit of handling for others.
You have to like doing it and learn the politics of the game.
Lots of things to discuss with the breeder.
If he's that good, I think you could show him yourself. No hair to fool with, just have to train him to stand pretty and act perky at the end of his leash, bet folks on here could give you some great pointers.
"Show quality" to me means great disposition, perfect conformation, a dog good enough to reproduce. Why shouldn't YOU have a great quality dog?
I vote for you buying him--maybe we'll see you on TV !
The purchase price of my MinPin included having the breeder show her to her championship, IF I so desired. Well, I was considering it until I had her home for the first few weeks and realized I would never turn her over to anyone, even for just a weekend.
First of all I would worry about her housetraining (the show pups are expected to go on a mat in a crate or ex pen). I thought it would be a huge setback each time especially since I was marking and treating a "go pee"command. Then there was the issue of the breeder not being on board with raw feeding. It was actually in my contract that I feed her Purina Puppy Chow! Forget that...
But mostly, I immediately started marker training, tethering, bonding and all the wonderful puppy protocals I learned on Leerburg and the idea of interupting that to hand her over to someone else...well.
I have had some conformation showing experience in the past, so I opted to show her myself. She has 4 Cdn. pts but it's a struggle, she's been in 20 or so shows and only pointed in 2. I'm sure she could have finished by now if I sent her off with the breeder, but I'm still glad I did not. She's doing great in obedience, anyway, which is more satisfying to myself, and the breeder is happy, too, because it reflects highly on her kennel, just in a different way.
Maybe you could sway your breeder by offering to show your chosen pup in
ob. instead of conformation, and she would see the benefit as well? A nuetered dog can show in Ob.( btw, I'm am showing in both with no problem, just different skills put on command)
Anyway, just things to think about. Good luck with whatever you decide!
Another thing to mull over- Beagles (to my knowledge) require significant conditioning to be show-fit. Are you ready to treadmill him, or bike him daily? (Not that a pet Beagle does not require significant exercise to be a happy, fulfilled pet.... but I'm sure you know what I mean) Is the breeder going to be upset with you if the dog is not fit, or slightly over, or under her desired weight for the conformation ring?
Thanks everyone, I left on August 5th for vacation so I haven't been online.
But I have since talked to the breeder and it seems quite casual. She says that she just wants to show him because she's proud of the beagles that she produces and wants to show them off. She likes to get the results of her breeding program out there and let people know that high quality dogs also go to pet homes. She will only be showing him locally and I will be going to watch. She seems like the type that would keep him if she really wanted him so I know this is just because she likes to show her dogs. There is no hidden agenda with breeding or travelling or anything. We discussed it.
When we first met she actually asked me if I was going to take him to obedience because she wanted me to. So I don't think she is going to change her mind now. He is quite a brave little guy so i think obedience training is a must.
I was right though, she gave him to me because I was willing to let her show him. She said that she wanted me to have a different puppy, but because I'd let her show this one it swayed her in that direction.
I'm going to make sure that in writing he is my dog. This isn't going to be a thing where I never get to see him.
I still think you ought to consider handling him yourself in a few shows. It's great fun and very easy (unless you're a clutz like I am lol)
I showed in confirmation for fun a few times and loved it. It's a different way of spending some fun time with your dog and other people who are just as nuts or more so about dogs, too. (there are some real nuts out there, too - makes it that much more amusing.)
