This is my first puppy liter as an adult. They already have teeth coming out. Their mommy doesnt seem to want to nurse them very much. What type of food can I give them, how many times a day should I feed them. Any advise would be helpful. Thanks
If the pups are fat and healthy looking then the mom probably is nursing them enough. Sometimes the moms will only go to the pups to nurse them and clean the nest. You might need to trim their nails in case they are irritating the dam's udder.
If they need more milk you can feed them evaporated milk and yogurt. For solid food you can feed them a good quality softened grain-free kibble (or canned food) or ground raw meat with suitable amounts of fat and calcium. Don't mix the raw and cooked foods in the same meal.
If you aren't already familiar with feeding raw meat and bone I wouldn't start with these pups at this age.
I'm currently feeding an orphaned litter of pups. They have done quite well since 5 days old on regular evaporated cows milk with yogurt added (one can of evap. milk + 3-4 heaping Tablespoons yogurt). They are 4 1/2 weeks old now and I'm feeding them every 4-6 hours. They have just started drinking their milk from a bowl so I've been leaving the evaporated milk and yogurt at room temp. for a few hours so the yogurt can culture the milk and thicken it up some, it's much less messy than runny milk at feeding time with uncoordinated puppies.
I've used the evaporated milk with orphaned puppies - I think we added yougurt, corn syrup and corn oil with a few drops of baby vitamins. It worked very well. These were small puppies though - before weaning age
The corn oil would add fat, but 1/2 the evap. milk calories are from fat, so I skipped that.
The corn syrup adds sugar, for palatability or an appetite stimulant? Do they need the extra sugar? I've never tasted bitch's milk to know how sweet it is. Anyone else ever tried it? Romulus and Remus how was it?
