Spit on your grave was okay....it was a revenge fantasy type movie and therefore over the top brutal however it seemed to lack something. It's not really a B movie, it's more an of exploitation film, one of those "how much can I make the viewer sick" movies.
Last house on the left (both versions) is in the same genre and while both versions and I Spit On Your Grace were extremely brutal, Last House on the Left I thought was more raw, you were rooting for the "good guys" and at the same time were conflicted about rooting for them since they got so tied up in their revenge they got "bad", add in about the part with the "bad guys'" son and it made for an interesting dynamic.
In I Spit On Your Grave it actually gets difficult to side with the victim. It's almost like she goes after the "bad guys" in the wrong order and it throws off the movie. The gore is top notch (and you will probably never be able to uncross you legs again if you're a guy) and it is disturbing, but I think overall it lacked something.
If you want disturbing, like "can barely watch this movie" disturbing I'd encourage you to check out some of the movies that fall under the "Cannibal Film" genre. Do your research though, as many are still banned in various countries. I'd also suggest NOT supporting the films in any way as many of them participated in horrific animal abuse for the added "real life gore" on screen. So, while I can't believe I"m actually saying this, download them illegally or borrow them, don't support the films at all. The human death and exploitation is all fake, you can be pretty confident about this because in many situations the directors had to prove this in court....give you an idea what you may find in these movies. Our special effects now are much grosser, but they're still gore fests. By far the easiest one to find (and probably most famous) is Cannibal Holocaust which you can typically stream for free online. As a warning pretty much all of these movies are completely tasteless, they're not very good either, you sort of watch them to say "I watched this"

I like disturbing but not if it has any thing to do with animal abuse.
Not directly related to movies but is also the season for fright nights, here in Ca Knotts Berry Farm called Knotts Scary Farm, Universal Horror night and the Queen Mary has the Ghost Ship they say it is actually haunted?

This is officially my new favorite thread!!!
I am so glad to be among fiends.....er ah Friends here at Leergurg!! Have often said I just want to get to be in a zombie flick before I die..........some bucket list eh? There is one bunch to avoid though, as they are truly disturbing.....that is anything directed by or made in France. French horror is REAL horror....
I will stick with Dexter and Netflix streaming........lots of fun and shivers! Masters of Horror, Tales From the Crypt..........Mystery Science Theater 3000........its all so delightful!

Saffron, have you seen The Walking Dead yet (or read the comics)?....I want to be a zombie on that show! We have similar taste in the lighter horror, I love all of the horror shows (Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow is what my parents started me on, still love the today!). I wish netflix would let me stream Tales from the Crypt, my old taped videos are pretty dead now and I'd love to watch some of them again...Check out Fear Itself, it's a lot like MoH though a little less gross.
I agree the French movies can be rough....Italian films too (they're responsible for a handful of the Cannibal films). A lot of them are REALLY good though, horrible and disguesint but so well done you don't care.
Most disturbing movie I've ever managed to get through (admittedly I had to take a few breaks, and only made it through because a friend of mine bet me $50 I wouldn't be able to....) It's called A Serbian Film....disgusting, distasteful, and not even in a way that even someone completely delusional could call "artistic"....Second on that list is Aftermath, which was more because I wasn't expecting it. Aftermath was supposedly part of a 3 movie series. The first one I watched, Genesis was beautiful, sad, dark, but amazingly done...I like it a lot....so then I watched Aftermath, thinking it was going to be as moving as Genesis....instead I watched a guy um we'll say "interact" with a corpse in great detail for a half an hour...

"A Serbian Film" and seriously don't do it, or read the entire plot FIRST so you at least know what you're getting into....not kidding, you should REALLY know what you're getting in to...
I wanted a zombie dog for the LONGEST time when I first saw them in the video game. If you've ever seen the making of the first movie, they had a lot of trouble getting their doberman actors not to eat their make-up. It was supposedly this super pet safe edible stuff that the dobies found delicious lol.

Since you started this post Jamie, I am spending WAY too much time bugging the be-jesus out of everyone at work to get the ultimate horror film for Sammy, (my daughter) and me to watch with the lights out on halloween! So, this is the list, some of our favourites, some of other peoples, all I have to do now is narrow it down to couple, because at my age, I will only be able to stay awake for two!
The haunting (new version)
Halloween (Jamie Lee Curtis)
Poltergeist
Exorcism of emily rose
Insidious
Friday the 13th (original)
Any of these tick your box??

I'll leave it to our expert Jamie to choose from your list but how can you go wrong with the originals Halloween & Friday 13th.
They say Exorcism of Emily is supposed to be as scary as Exorcist I'll have to see that one.
Too funny Jamie your comment "seriously don't do it" now I have to but I'll read about it first.

Exorcism of Emily Rose I think is based on a true story, first watch it is classic jump off the sofa stuff, second watch is actually quite sad, the poor girl is in torment, and you sort of accept the scientific expalnation, really good fim though.
Am totally with you on the original Halloween, the eighties did some howler horrors, but this was one of the good ones; I remember watching it babysitting in my teens, scared the hell out of me!

How old is your daughter?
I'd put the Original Nightmare on Elm Street on that list too (can't beat the classics)
Halloween and Friday the 13th are classics, you can't go wrong there. If either of you haven't seen any of those it's pretty much a requirement, you must see them XD
Poltergeist, also a classic but not as "required seeing" as Friday the 13th or Halloween.
For people who are scared by that sort of thing Exorcism of Emily Rose is a good one (if the Exorcist scared you, this one will too).
I found The Haunting remake almost forgettable IMO, I actually had to check it was the one I was thinking of (Owen Wilson was in it correct?). The original I liked a lot more, but I'm not sure it's a halloween movie night movie.
I can't comment on Insidious, we had a power failure when I tried to watch it...but the first 10 minutes were interesting?
and Joe, not kidding...make sure to read it about it first, it's gross >_>
