I was trying to think if I had ever seen a mutt with terrible allergies. Other than flea allergy, I'm not sure I have.
Betty, I asked the derma vet a couple months ago about that. She said that mutts are definitely not the highest on the list of allergy dogs, but depending on the breeds on them, they can have just as many problems.
She said that there are dogs that are way more disposed to allergies than others - GSD, goldens, labs, etc. But the only dog that she really doesn't see (she's had one in her whole career) is the Vizsla. Maybe that's because they aren't as popular as the breeds with more problems?

Yes. My dog's derm vet too says that mutts in general are lower on the incidence list unless they are Shepherd or Terrier mixes (in her practice). (This was in a conversation about the atopic dogs I've adopted and what breeds they were.)

I have not, now that you mention it.

I'm surprised to hear you say this about mutts. In my dog grooming practice, I would estimate that 85% of my clients are mixed breeds, and out of those I would say most, if not all, have some kind of skin condition.
Warty growths, weepy abcesses, lumps, open sores, red rashy skin with flea bites, excessively oily coats, fungal infections - surely some of this is caused by allergies? Diet is a problem, too, I know, but I'm convinced alot of what I am seeing is hereditary. Anything that is crossed with a poodle or a cocker (terripoos, multipoos, cockapoos, even labradoodles) is almost guaranteed to have issues.
These owners are spending hundreds if not thousands to "cure" their dogs and it simply doesn't happen. I've seen many examples over the years. They bring me their prescription shampoos, ask for advice, bemoan their vet bills and expect me to have some kind of holistic magic answer!
Honestly, ime, I don't think hybrid vigor exists anymore...

Interesting! I had not read this about Poodle crosses.
"Most have some kind of skin condition." This is so sad.

I had a Rott/Shep with TERRIBLE allergies. Terrible. Awful. As is the poor thing was naked before we ditched the vet and went to a Derm vet.
On the poodle crosses- I've seen the same thing Cindy! Warts, pimples, terribly yeasty skin/ears. (the last generally related to diet, but not always) The Poodle and Goldendoodle's my boss owns have bad ears- and the golden doodles are not even a year old yet!!!!! *GASP*

Yes, Shepherd (and Terrier) mixes stand out as the most allergy-vulnerable crosses in my derm vet's experience.

I wish I could ask her about Poodle mixes! I had never heard or read this, but you guys would certainly know.

PS
You both mentioned warts and warty growths. Mostly on the face, or trunk, or where? Is there any more common body site?

Not that I've noticed. When a dog has one, they seem to be scattered ALL over. Generally where they are most convenient to hit with clippers.....

Yes, they are all over, including on the rims of their eyes, inside ears and other places where removal is a must . . . they are ugly and the dogs scratch or chew on them causing them to bleed alot and get big scabs all tangled up with their hair, well, Kelly, you know what I mean!!!
