I taught my Aussie eye contact with the method Lee just described. It worked fantastic once I learned which eye to look at. Her blue one or her brown one.The dog understood right away. I was the confused one.

Lee, I think both way is the same, the only diffence is the treat come from my mouth instead of my hand, like I said the command for me is "look" and as soon as he make eyes contact with me, I spit out a piece of hot dog, same like you, as soon as the pup made eye contact with you, you reinforce his correct behavior with yes and treat from you hand, I think the only difference is that your hand is dirty and stinky, and I have bad breath, now you make me think, I thought he likes to lick my face because he loves me but probably he likes to lick it because I smell like hot dog.

The stimuli whether food or toy we used is motivation for a behavior to happened. Whether we used hands or mouth is in matterial the most important is we must understand classical conditioning or Operant conditioning.
The dog should know the condition respond and the condition stimulus.

It's only the same IF you have specifically done the kind of work we're talking about...teaching the dog that focusing on the reward will not earn the reward. Otherwise you are simply luring and we are not. If you can take that food out of your mouth, sit the dog in front while passing the food from hand to hand right in front of the dog, then you have taught him the right focus. If he looks at your hands, then you know you've only taught him to look at the reward; he doesn't really know the correct behavior.

Lee- Nice to see someone else uses BilJac balled up as a reward.... I've never met a dog that didn't like it and would not do anything for it....and for like $2.99 a bag you can't loose!

Yes I have proof my pup by taking hot dog out of my mouth and into my hands, the very first time he would try to eat it but one command "look" and he is focus on my eyes, I don't think there is anything wrong with luring the dog to look at you to help him in the right direction, and then introduced distraction and so that he will look away and when he hear the command and look back into my eyes and he gets the reward, not because the reward is in my mouth, this also give me 2 free hands, one on the leash and one on his butt if he doesn't sit straight from heeling.

Trust me, the food is not normally in my hands! I only do that to teach the pup that even when the attraction is right in his face, the only way to earn it is figure out what I want. But once that lesson is learned, the food or ball is in the pocket, out of sight and my hands are free....and so is my voice cuz I don't look like a chipmunk with a mouthful of nuts! Can't imagine what Biljac tastes like and have NO desire to find out!

Jeannette, Blue eyes, or just one blue and one brown is quite common in Australian Shepards. It was very distracting to me at first. Yeah, I know. I got a few wierd hangups! Most dogs I've worked with did well with the hotdog in the mouth till I tried it on my JRT. How he knew I don't know, but if I didn't have one in my mouth he could care less about eye contact. When I did the method Lee talked about, the problem soon dissapeared.
