... Sometimes you know the decision you make is right only because it causes you so much personal pain and you still do it. ... Almost the best definition of unselfish love I have ever accidently written I think.
I think so too.

While my motives weren't pure when I started this thread, I had some hurt and anger; I think it evolved into a really good thing.
Doesn't hurt to stand back a bit and see where your partner is coming from.
Thanks to everyone that contributed their own feelings. You have helped me a lot and I hope it will help other board members in the future.

Awe, I love King. He's such a gentle giant. Glad I got to meet him. Sorry to hear he's having some bad days.

Betty, how amazing that you were able to process/work through your emotions via this post. It IS good to hear from both sides of the perspective, isn't it?
I'm so sorry you are facing this with your "heart dog". You will know when it is time... and we will all be here to support you.

Thanks Barbara, I know you guys will be, this place absolutely rocks when it comes to things like this.
I know Katie, I really can't visualize this place without my white guy showing the new dogs the ropes. I'm happy you got to meet him to, he is such a sweetie.

A little update.....
Last night I was figuring out who needed rabies shots this year and came up with a pretty significant number.
My husband was going over the records with me and we were figuring out who needed what and all that good stuff when he suggested we have the mobile vet come out so that we could get to meet him and see how he was with our pooches.
His eyes looked so stark when he said it I could of cried for him. I didn't want to make a big deal about it because that would of made it worse for him but just said what a good idea, that if we like him I wouldn't mind having him come out for our puppy certs.
Don't want anyone to misunderstand, it is not Kingster's time yet but for the first time I am starting to think that maybe, just maybe, this is a decision that we will be able to make jointly.
Selfishly I don't want to carry that burden by myself. If need be, I will, but I don't want to.

It sounds like your man has given some quiet thought to what you had brought up a few days ago about Kingster, and has maybe realized that it has to be considered, when the time does come....
I envy and admire you guys that have strong and agreeable marriages, I couldn't hack it, not just one time, but twice!
Probably not going to bother a third time!
I have always found the art of compromise a difficult one to actually execute
Sounds like you have a good man there Betty

I didn't get married until I was in my 40's and I think that has a lot to do with it. By then even I got tired of fighting and have found that so many of the fights aren't really worth it.
I had a very long history of broken engagements. At our wedding my husband was getting a very strange expression on his face when person after person said, I lost the bet! Never thought I would see this day!
Even my dad said, "good, your here" where it was time for us to walk down the aisle. He recovered quickly and said, "it's not too late, say the word and we'll leave right now."
I've often wondered if we would of left my mom sitting in the front pew or if we would of somehow snuck her out of the church too.

LOL!!
My first wedding, my Dad walked me up the aisle, and all the way up he kept saying it wasn't too late Simon was a lovely guy, but a bum, and every one saw it but me, of course, still I got 3 great kids with him!
Second time, older but not wiser it transpires
I am 48 and still too intractable for a partnership, I just find it easier only having myself to argue with
