Eric:
I'm no die-hard; my current GSD is my first working dog. I'd trained my own companion dogs for 30+ years, but this has opened endless doors for me. I wasn't even looking for an intense dog. I was just trying to fill a void. Once I got her, I realized I needed to sharpen her obedience in order to have a suitable companion. That led me to Leerburg, then to a SchH club, then to new circles of friends, etc, etc.
I'm with Steve; I enjoy having a sport dog to have fun with. I have a 9mm for protection.
I'm with you guys (Duane and Steve) on wanting to do ring sports and bite work for fun. I'm attracted to the high level of training involved in that. I was just watching some French ring videos Leerburg has up, and that looks like some serious fun. I've got nothing but respect for PP dogs, but I wouldn't be comfortable relying on my dog for seriously protecting me in a bad situation. I had to chuckle at the 9mm for protection comment too, I don't want my dog to be my gun.
Eric;
What's really awesome is that a good sport dog will let you know when he thinks you need the firearm. Be careful, though... Sadie wants me to shoot the mailman, the ice cream truck, the schoolbus, innocent passers-by, etc, etc.

I had to lol at that.
I'm surprised Will hasn't chimed in yet. *hint*hint*
