Is it too soon to start contacting breeders? Would they not have planned out litters for next spring yet?
Never too soon I wondered the same thing but then I talked to breeders this winter who told me about planned litters for spring '13 but nothing before then! The puppy I ended up putting a deposit down on in April will be born in August and I took one of the last 2 spots

Never too soon. I've had people contact me on an off for a couple of years before they get a pup. In my mind a breeder should understand that you are researching and learning and support that.
Also timing for a new pup to be introduced is critical.
Check out your local clubs and try and find a fit with one. Try and figure out if most of the dogs there are from the same breeder. Often clubs have an "in house" or favorite breeder, often the training director or decoy.
If that's the case and you really like the club it may be to your benefit to get a dog from that breeder.
