Most folks would be totally shocked, surprised, even hurt if they realized how easily a dog can re establish a bond with new owners. Even dogs of advanced age.
FOR ME, taking them with me when they can be cared for till it's THEIR time is cruel. Leave them with a trusted family member or friend!
ABSOLUTELY.
But then there are the ones who have no trusted person who will take over, or who are wired in such a way that they don't function well "out there."
My dogs have their trusted family member all agreed on, in detail; I hope this thread means that more dogs will have that.

No shock for me. I know my dogs would follow the food -- in a heartbeat. LOL
I've had so many adopted "pre-owned" dogs .... dogs who bonded with me readily and completely. I know how easily they can do so.
Still ..... a geriatric dog (maybe with "issues") with no trusted person willing to take him ..... I couldn't bear to think what his remaining life would probably be if he suddenly lost me (and of course his home) if no arrangements had been made.

I was not referring to the dog's ability to bond with a new owner. Only that the new owner was capable of providing a good home for the dog.
It is scary to think a dog who may readjust easily, could be trying to readjust in an unfit home. I think we have all heard the horror stories of abused, neglected, misunderstood dogs who were "re-homed".
I truly wish there was a place that I could send Bear were that to happen, who would try to give her as much of a stressfree and peaceful life as she can have. But sadly there is not a line waiting to take her.
i think that is the case in so many dogs who end up in a shelter when someone dies. it is not that they couldn't have thrived somewhere else, it is that there wasn't a somewhere else to thrive in.

I agree..... and I know how few make it out of the shelter system once in it.
I have a concern for that as well. I am not a spring chicken and I am concerned about my dogs. My family will not take them. So, I have checked with rescue organizations to see if it would be feasible to have them cared for there until they can find a new home. I keep detailed records of my dogs so that in the event I go to heaven, whoever would be interested in my dogs would have everything on them. Hoping that would help them choose them. Also, getting the CGC test and certificate, I hope will help rehoming them one day too. Lord willing, I will be alive until they go.
Some people leave a trust for their pets with cash to help for their care. Cody ate up my money for the trust I was going to do when he became very ill and almost died a few years ago.
