We are safe. No trees on the house trucks, lots of branches & debre. Lights flickered all night long but for once I didn't loose power or flood. We were on the side of the storm that had way higher winds then rain. My fence took the BIG hit. Almost half of it is down. Wind just snapped the post out at ground level.
It was pretty scarey taking the dogs out yesterday evening. I have all woods behind my home & close to 80 mph winds were realy blowing everything around. Took them out on my tracking line last night so they had stay right by me. They wanted to go check out the down fence panels. Silly dogs!
The overall damage here is devestating. The flooding is unreal. Not only homes but downtown areas streets & stores were flooded from the tidal surge coming up river inlets etc.
The high tides with the moon tide with the storm surge was the likes of which hasn't been seen here since 1039! Even Irene last year was not as bad on the coastline as this storm.
I wasn't even thinking .... of course, rivers too are flooded with high tide and the surge.
I know it's record-breaking, but ....... since 1039?
You have food and dog food?

Yep, since 1039...that's what they are saying. There was a hurricane back then that they called the 'long island express' that devistated the area.
This was somekind of super/perfect storm type storm becasue of the artic front coming down the storm fronm the midwest & Hurricane Sandy all meeting over us that created this freak strom.
Food is good. Freezers are full & frig, too. We are good.

Who was keeping records in 1039? Columbus got lost and ran into this country some 350 yrs after that.
Who knew it was called Long Island back in 1039.

Anne, I'm so glad to hear you made it through. Sounds like it's been a stressful couple of days for you, but at least fences can always be repaired!
Connie, I'm glad your family in the area is safe, albeit some of them going bonkers. I guess the kids may have to be entertained by (gasp!) playing board games or reading books or telling stories, like they did in the "Olden Days," (which was probably around 1039).

I figured that out. It was funnier as 1039, though.

I mean, the only person here who could vouch for the Great Flood of 1039 would be Bob Scott.

We understand, Anne. We're laughing with you......
Well, except maybe for Bob. Not sure if he's laughing.

Connie,
Yes, I heard from him just a few whiles ago. He reports that the storm apparently did not want to visit CNY.
Kinda typical weather, actually for Fall when the rain visits. Gray day, drizzly wet, low clouds, light gusty breezes. But the storm all but avoided the Syracuse area. And as reported by friends, the weather to the west, in Buffalo and Rochester, isn't all that out of the ordinary for storms this time of year.
The weather had to cross the mountain ranges to get to upstate, so maybe that had some thing to do with the diminished severity of the storm around here.
The coast is a different story entirely. My uninformed opinion is that it will be a few weeks before things approach normal in some parts of where the storm came ashore.
Connie, thank you for inquiring.
Mike

Oh, good!
I wasn't sure, because my daughter in the Berkshires (the only family member who doesn't live right on the coast) lost (and still has no) power.
Yeah, it looks like it's going to be a long and painful process, for sure.
