Well, the results came back last night and the sample was malignant. I am taking her in on the 29th for surgery, unless there is a sooner cancellation. I have decided to go ahead and spay her at the same time. The tumor has grown noticeably since the day I started this thread! Scary stuff, but it's out of my hands. There is some solace in knowing I have done everything to promote her health the best I know how. Honestly, my biggest hope is that she can avoid prolonged discomfort/Elizabethan collars, etc. if it has spread already and the end is near.

Chip, there are other post-surgery collars that are less traumatic for many dogs. Let me know if you want links.
And good for you, because you did what needed doing. She is fortunate to have you.
Please keep us posted .... fingers are crossed.

Bummer. If it's breast cancer they may take the whole line of tissue from groin to chest, something I am not sure I agree with in a 9 yr old dog.
If it's breast cancer one wishes the dog had been spayed a long time ago. What a drag, painful and expensive.

Thanks, guys. I'm taking her in for blood work in the morning, and the vet asked if I wanted chest X-rays. I guess the answer is yes? Also, she said when she went in for the spay, she should get a good idea if it has progressed past the mammary tissue.

My editor was open and I missed this post. It sounded like she was going to take all the "lumps," which total four, as well as do the spay. I too wish I'd had her spayed a long time ago in retrospect. I really believed I was doing the best thing keeping her intact.

I do spay at full growth if a female comes to me intact.
That said, it took me a lot of research to make that decision.
There's a LOT to think about. If your dog had been spayed and now faced splenic hemangiosarcoma or cardiac hemangiosarcoma, you'd be wishing you hadn't spayed.
All we can do is weigh and learn and then do our best.

What causes cancer? Who knows? NO ONE. OTHER cancers come in dogs spayed early, as does obesity, diabetes, urinary incontinence (which can be a terminal condition in a relatively young dog if she's big.) The body fails in one way or the other, there are no perfect decisions that lead to everlasting life. You were a caring loving owner for her and still are and this finding is not your fault.
One thing -- make certain that your vet takes a chest Xray before you do surgery. You want to make certain that there are no visible problems in the chest.
Removing the ovaries, the spay, is a good idea. Many breast tumors feed on estrogen so having those female organs out is a good plan. Also, caught early lots of mammary tumors respond well.
