Thanks for all the input. I have GentaSpray. Is that good?
I actually clipped it twice as soon as we got to the house. Maybe in hind sight a bad idea. Once at the end and then a little further back. He just looked at me. After the second time he got up and walked around me and wanted to sit on my lap like he does if he gets hurt or scared. I hate if he goes to the vet he'll get muzzled and then hurt.
Later I peroxided it. And he stared off into space cause he hates peroxide. He isn't bothering it. I am going to keep him in the bedroom tonight with the gate since he moves from dog bed to dog bed at night do I can hear if he licks. I am wondering if a wrap will make him interested in it and I don't have a collar to keep him off it.

I don't think clipping it was a bad idea.
And I think Genta Spray is fine, especially if it tastes bad.
I've had a couple of dogs with similar events, and both grew back once I had an even close cut. But they were not down the center like that.
I don't know ..... maybe just wait and see how he feels about it tomorrow? If you were able to clip that already, you may be able to get it (the "catchy" part) pretty close tomorrow. Especially with some warm bacon and everything all in place and a very calm attitude. (I woudn't say this with no training in place except that you already had success while it had to have been throbbing pretty bad.)
It's Monday morning and we are still good. The nail piece laid down so far by Sunday morning we let it go and I put spray on a few times. It got dirt in so I peroxided it and then sprayed once.
Deciding whether we should go to vet today if we can get in. I think we should in case we need an antibiotic.
I hate to recommend no exam --- if the thing gets infected you could be pissed and I'd hate to be at fault with that --- but I think this injury, from what I can see on the internet, is going to get better on it's own.
We went in this afternoon. Held his head while vet popped off the loose piece, said continue to spray with antibiotic. No charge and got peace of mind. Thanks to everyone for helping me along through the weekend.
