Charles, dogs used for human apprehension were trained on sleeves and suits. Is that not real work?
No one who needs a herding dog to do daily chores uses anything but a working line Border Collie. No one. Go to Ireland and Wales and Scotland. With a last name like mine you should know this.
If you read Stephanitz's book, you'll actually find that the German Shepherd was first and foremost a show dog. It wasn't until years into the breed they started being used for protection. Therefore, while the foundation stock were herding dogs, they were never really selectively bred for these qualities.
Also, where do you think these "working" dogs come from? They come from "working" bloodlines. It's why seeing-eye groups have their own breeding programs, the hunting dogs have their own, the herding, the biting, etc. they don't just pop out of some stray dog ready to go.
I guess I don't really know what you're trying to argue.

I am sick of hearing the "working dog" term used for dogs that do nothing but bite a burlap sleeve .. that is not work unless you do it for money. When I go bowling it is play and when a pro bowler goes bowling that is work. Maybe the work part is selling the dogs??
You're sort of contradicting yourself without knowing it. As a breeder looking for champion bowling children, I would choose not to breed you. But I would work you and watch you bowl to know this.
A lot of dogs that bite your burlap sleeves will bite real people in real situations. We need to train these dogs and work these dogs to determine whether or not they are capable of this in the hopes they pass it on to their offspring.
If you don't think any protection sports (or any dog sports) aren't work and don't say anything about the temperament and physical capabilities of a dog, you are SORELY mistaken.
Ivan Balabanov trained a small terrier to bite a sleeve and do a schutzhund routine, so I guess that little dog is a working dog in your worlds. Schutzhund is not police work, it is a game.
There was a time I drank the koolaid and beleived some of this GSD crapola about lines and working and show .. I need to revise my web site as it is sadly unused and out of date. The correct term would be training and not work.
I have had a couple go into police service but that is more training than genetics
I don't believe the first part and the second part only shows you have no valid experience to be worth listening to. If they don't have the abilities from the right genetics, you're not going to train anything.
You don't place puppies until 6mos or older? So they can be raised in your methods and program? Yeah, Charles Finley from the safety of his own yard knows better then anyone else. Buying a bunch of dogs at a Virginia closeout makes you an expert. Lol.
