The best thing you can get from a puppy class is the chance to proof the OB that you are working on at home.
The schutzhund club will be a better training group for this puppy, IMHO. The folks there will have a better understanding of the dog that you would like to raise. They can tell you how to bring out his prey drive, and when it's the proper time to progress into each new phase of training.
Someone who sells a training class would like you to feel that finishing that class is a benchmark, and that it will set you off on the road to dog ownership with all of the tools you need. The schutzhund folks will tell you that training is a lifetime project, and that each accomplishment is an open doorway to whatever is next
Yeah...I don't quite buy the "take these 3 classes and then you're DONE," idea, regardless of what you want to do with your dog.
I was proud of his sits and downs even with the little yappers running wild around him. He was weaned early (mother had mastitis VERY severe) and really needs the socialization with other dogs in a safe, positive environment. Given that about half the class is just supervised play time between the pups, I think this is just the thing for that.
I think with any trainer or class, unless you really, really completely agree with their methods and find they're a great fit for your dog and what you want in them, you have to pick and choose what works for you and leave the rest on the buffet.

Is this a large group of strange dogs?
It's a pretty small class of all puppies. Most are toy breeds and spend the majority of their time separated from the bigger pups. Our puppy only spends time with two other pups, a lab and a bloodhound. The little yappers, though, make a lot of noise on their side.
I'm not terribly impressed with the instructor so far. The class seems to be geared more toward people who have never owned a dog and just went out and bought a toy breed puppy. She also doesn't listen to the owners well. When I tried to explain something about my pup to her, she cut me off and walked away to deal with another dog.
I'm hoping we can get at least some use out of the class.
if you've paid for it and you can see some positive result coming out of it then stick it out to the end .
just remember : you are the one who is ultimately responsible for training the dog you want to wind up with , so consider every bit of advice you are offered . see if it helps you get to where you want to be . sometimes that advice can help you to confirm or refute the thinking ( principles ) that you are using to develop your dog .
Sorry for all of the repeat posts above. I'm not sure how that happened!
I think I'm going to talk to the trainer and see if she's open to us taking a different approach than other members of the class or if she is going to insist that everything be done her way. That answer will help inform my decision either way.
I'd rather eat the cost of a training class than have my pup headed in the wrong direction.
On a positive note, we took him out this weekend to different places and, instead of using strangers as treat dispensers, I kept redirecting his attention to me, working on basic commands and using the people and environment as distractions and he did beautifully.
