It is REALLY EASY to teach a dog that it is only allowed to dig in one spot (a sandbox). I would definitely try that before messing around with planting crap bombs in holes. Gross.
You can get a little device to put in the ground that makes a noise that drives moles away. I don't know if it works for everyone, but it works for the people who I know that have one. It would be a much safer thing to try before poison, with a dog who runs loose in the yard unsupervised. Plus there wouldn't be more moles coming back to take the place of the dead ones.
I don't know if the noise bothers dogs or not.

Just thought I would let all of you who tried to help us with this problem know that (to my dismay) the suggestion of putting the dog's "number 2" in the holes seems to have been the trick.
I did this to about 4 or 5 of her holes and she hasnt dug one since. :-D
We still have the moles and squirrels. She doesnt try to dig down for the moles but still tries her darnest to climb for them squirrels!!
LOL
She also has taken up the sport of Soccer now.
She will block chase and retrieve a soccer ball like a pro. Only thing is I dont think the human players are allowed to carry the ball in their mouths. lol
Thanks again for all your help. We have a very happy Boarder Collie now.

What?!?! Oh my God, are you serious Lesli? My dog used to have a wiggly giggly ball & one of the other wiggly giggly things. He chewed them both open and got the squeaker thing out. Although that happened a little while ago, so I imagine if it was going to kill him, he'd be dead by now, right? I know nothing about zinc poisoning.

I would like to know if the dog is digging for the sake of digging or is it digging for moles. If it is digging for moles does it ever catch one ? If it did catch one I would take it away as soon as possible, leave the mole in the back yard, put a remote trainer on the dog, and send it out to find that mole and when he does, zap. I would make it think the last thing it would want would be to catch a mole. Hey maybe hide that in your sand box lettem dig that up,zap! Create an avoidance to the mole.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it! |

BC's are not the best breed to leave to there own devices ,they need lots of things to do, play with. We had a digger at one time ,filled all the holes up with water ,but she hated water so it worked for us .But i would find time outside and time inside a crate ,or better still plenty of time for the two of you to do things togeather . But with all crated young dogs ,sorry i forgot if this BC was a youger dog or pup ? they will build up that energy . Someone said about putting rocks in the holes ,you can look at this another way so now you have a rock garden .You just have to laugh at our 4 legged friends , don't you just love them. Peter

I would like to know if the dog is digging for the sake of digging or is it digging for moles
That should be easy to figure out.
I thought at first our bitch was digging out of boredom, until I saw that her excavations were usually in trenches rather than just round holes. Well, lets see...We have moles, gophers, voles, and ground squirrels here.
Moles are easier to get rid of than gophers (who prefer roots to grubs). But so far we've been pretty unsuccessful are ridding our area of any of these pests; soooo, we have trenches all over the yard. I don't know if she's caught any, but I know she will eat the wildlife if given a chance. (And grasshoppers, June bugs, and spiders. Yuck! Won't touch the black beetles though. Must taste funny.)
Putting feces in the holes has not worked. The bitch simply goes around that area and will dig beside the feces.
*Sigh*
I'm resigned to have the back yard look like something out of WWII...

Any way you could bring her to your father in laws?? Might do her some good to socialize her and show her new enviornments. Maybe your father in law would enjoy her too..
