IMHO, if I were going to rely on a dog for actual protection, I would certainly insist on having a properly trained ppd. Anything less would be unreliable.
While I share the sentiment that anyone serious about personal protection should first acquire a gun, in the past two years I have met several young couples and a couple of young, single females that will not consider having guns in their household. To them, a dog is the next best option. After a discussion with my training director, I came away with the impression that it's better to help these clients properly train their dogs than to turn them away and have the dogs recklessly trained, or have these people get scammed by someone selling inferior PPDs.
ETA: the post about the insurance company is consistent with what my HO Ins provider has always told me; if my dog bites, they settle, all dogs are treated the same, regardless of breed or size, and my dog labels me as a higher risk.

Yes, and the PPD would need ongoing training throughout it's life. I tried to impress the point that just because a dog is a PPD today doesn't mean that it will always remain consistent without followup work.

Totally agree with you Duane on the trained ppd, my concern would be an untrained dog would not know when to stop.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family. |

Duane, so you're saying that if someone burglarizes a house and gets bitten he can then sue?
But he was there illegally

Not my opinion or my sentiments, Natalie. Strictly relaying what my insurance agent has told me multiple times.
Somehow, the dog in the article acquired a "history of biting"...

I see. It makes no sense.
Duane, I know you don't agree. I guess I was wondering what the thought process behind this was

My agent tells me that they don't let it go to litigation; they settle all claims. Based on my experience with insurance claims for other things, they consider it cheaper to settle than to litigate. There have been times when I didn't feel I was at fault in an auto accident, and my insurance paid anyway. I had absolutely no sy-so in the matter.

Sorry for derailing the thread. i'm almost done
Connie, your first article seems to go on common sense. i'm reading your second one.
but in the first one it seems like they're taking everything into consideration and, for the most part, the decisions are fair.
i just can't imagine why an insurance company (Duane, i'm not arguing with you, i understand this is what they do) would pay on a claim that seems so wrong, a person was obviously there to do something bad and the dog did his job.
it'd seem like it's cheaper to fight it but maybe not.
OTOH, if anyone can sue for anything and the company just pays without contesting it sounds like an easy way to get paid for people.
