One thing I was probably doing wrong (can't really remember but it's highly likely) before watching Michael's tug video was moving the toy TOWARDS him, especially when he was slow to take it up or lost his grip.
WRONG WRONG WRONG.
There ain't "NO SUICIDE RABBITS" made perfect sense the moment Michael said it, but that is a detail that had previously escaped me.
Ellis is on of the finest TEACHERS (or anything) that I have seen.
I was immediately reminded of other world class teachers when first listening to him.
Most people have never even SEEN a "world class teacher" and think the ordinary teachers we had in school or encounter in our work or hobby lives are "excellent" much of the time.
Relative to the BAD teachers they are excellent but the top teachers are an order of magnitude beyond that.
(FYI: My business was teaching computer network, system, and development professionals an accelerated professional course, and we routinely achieve MEASURABLE results an order of magnitude better than 'ordinary training' -- I add this not to brag but to establish my credentials for the opinion given of Michael.)
Great teachers I have known include John Grinder and Richard Bandler of NLP fame, as well as Don Box who taught .NET/COM development or Scott Meyers who taught C++ (computer language).
It's amazing what you can learn when you find a world class teacher or a truly top notch book by an author who knows how to explain essential things in an effective manner.
IMO, the thing that sets the ME videos apart is the amount of effort he puts into explaining things in layman's terms, paired with examples of new handlers demonstrating what he is explaining.
I think the videos are hands down the best value in dog training. I just keep adding to the collection, and once in a while I go back and review videos I have seen 20 times. I do want to get the new Power of Food, as I hear it is a bit different.
This is a great idea, I will try to get a video of me and Carlin.
Great videos posted so far!
As per the ME thread, is there any chance he will make a nosework video? The Andrew Ramsey videos were great for the how, but I missed the WHY that is so captivating to me in ME videos.
It disappointment me (after watching the "Philosophy" video that most of the videos didn't really seem to show this (at least not in the early parts.)
Now, watching E-collar I, I have found A LITTLE more on leash pressure but my guess is not nearly enough.
Sure, what the description, leash pressure (early) training SEEMS pretty obvious, and the little bit in E-Collar I indicates that *we* are on the right track but my guess is that Michael can show us many subtle tricks that will make this far more effective....
I also wish Michael would do a PUPPY video -- maybe he isn't the "puppy expert" but it would have been nice to see how *HE* works with puppies and gets the dogs READY for the real work....
I have a new (almost 4 month old) puppy and really wish to know what mistakes I am making and what opportunities I am missing....
Sure, other people do this work (including you Ed) but while I have found LOTS of good material including YOUR videos, Michael has that special take that would really fill in our knowledge and add confidence.
