As someone who won't be participating in the contest (and therefore not stacking the deck in my favor, lol), I'll throw a crazy suggestion out there that I bet no one on this board has done yet.
Teach your dog to read! I saw a segment on TV and it got me intrigued. Just search for it on Youtube. There are videos there and elsewhere. The basic premise is you show your dog a large piece of paper with a command written on it, and you teach him to respond to the sight of the word, without any additional verbal or signaled commands. "Down" and "Sit" would be the two most logical ones to start with. And you would have to teach both of them to prove that the dog knows the difference and is not just doing one command in response to the sight of a piece of paper.
Anyway, it's something I've thought I might try to have fun with this coming winter if the polar vortexes come back and we're stuck indoors for weeks at a time.

I was also hoping to have more entrants than the last one. I think I see five here .... anyone else?
Also, this might lure (and keep) more participants: "I'd like to participate and I'm not working two jobs anymore so I should have the time. Still busy though so we'll probably be looking for something relatively simple that can be done indoors." (Cathy said that.)
Also, if we started early September, vacations would probably be over ....
I'm kinda thinking that everything Connie mentioned is a good reason to keep the category broad. For instance - this time of year is great for northern people to be outside but southern people to be inside. I would suggest having a category like "tricks" or one like "life skills" (or both and a person can pick one). Then let people train something in those parameters that works for their dog and situation. But in the end I'm game for whatever gets decided!

PLUS, then there are two first prizes! But could we get a head count as well as comments on Mara's suggestion?
If there's agreement on the categories, and if we have enough people, then we could start the signup next week and the actual start of training at the end of the week?
So let's see a potential head count and include a comment on Mara's two broad categories (including tweaks, if desired).
