I use the chart as a starting point and then check him every few days to make sure I can still easily feel ribs and see a waist on him. If he starts getting a little chubby, I adjust to 1 cup less total food a day and then check him a few days later to see how he looks. Adjustments are made as needed.
I measure out the total amount for the day, take out some for training and divide the rest into meals. When he goes through a growth spurt, he gets very skinny so I up his food by a cup until he's got a little meat back on his bones. He'll be 9 months old soon so I expect the major growth spurts to slow down substantially.
I am happy to report good poops again so far today.
After almost of week of pretty good poops I came home to find a poop covered dog, crate and blankets. Somewhere between his last meal and me coming home from work, poor Kiss had explosive diarrhea. Even though it was freezing cold outside, I put his "sister's" coat on him and had to leave him outside for about 30 minutes to let him clear out the rest of his system.
I've given him two days worth of small meals of boiled chicken, mushy rice and some pumpkin to settle his stomach. In the morning, I'm going to break down and buy a bag of crappy Dog Chow. I hate the ingredients in it but if it will help my boy get some decent poops going, I'll feed it for now while I do some research into something else for him. I really don't want to do raw as I have trouble feeding myself proper meals and I don't want to mess things up with a rapidly growing puppy.
Niomi, I'm still working on getting some pictures loaded. I can't find the cable to download them so I'm going to buy another cable tomorrow morning when I'm out getting dog food.
I've been using crappy Puppy Chow for a week now and had good results.
I called my breeder and got the correct dosage for Safeguard (Fenbendazole) and ran a 3 day dose through him.
I bought him some Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy food and will begin the change over starting tonight as I have tomorrow off. Fingers crossed this will work for him. If it doesn't, I'm not sure what I'll do next.
If it dosen't work try fasting the dog for 24 hours might give the gut a chance to rest & heal a bit. Alow plenty of clean fresh water for the dog while fasting.
Then start over with VERY small multiply meals ( 3-4) throughout the day of some poached chicken & mushy overcooked rice & pumpkin. By small I mean a 1/4 cup.
If you start back slowly for the next several days or so keeping the total amount small for a week you might be able to get back on track. Feeding too much too soon will start the bad cycle all over again.
This has worked for my dogs.
Right now I would be more concerned in getting the dog to eat & not get the runs than to worry about more weight loss for a week or so of small meals. Once the dog is stable again you can slowly increase food to get the weight back to where it should be.
Thanks Anne. I'm going to start using the Blue Buffalo as small meals only for the first few days until I see how it handles it.
I did the chicken and rice for 2 days before I started the Puppy Chow and he had good poops using it and the good poops continued with the Puppy Chow. It is such a horrible food though that I really don't want to keep him on it much longer than a couple of weeks max.
I'm hoping using the two different kinds of wormers (strongid and fenbendazole) will have eliminated anything possibly causing the poop issues. Only time will tell.
Switch him gradually.....mostly old food for a day...then a little less of that & more of the new...until he is getting all the news food. This dog's body has had so much go on lately....anymore sudden changes is looking for trouble. Give his body a chance to catch up...before you make another change. Then stick with that food for a while before anymore changes.
I gave him nothing for 12 hours and then a small meal of 3/4 cup old food with 1/4 cup new food. I did that for all his meals yesterday and so far good poops.
I'll do the same thing today and then if things are good, I'll go to 1/2 old food and 1/2 new food for 2 days.
He has access to fresh clean water at all times and will be let outside every two hours just in case things go wrong.
You might want to try a good supplement for digestive tract health...one with probiotics and digestive enzymes. My preference is for B-Natural's Digestion Blend, but there are other good ones out there.
