There may be some misunderstandings of terminology here, but I just want to point out that there is no heeling required, period, for the CGC (Canine Good Citizen). You just have to demonstrate that your dog will walk with you, under control, on a loose leash, following a very brief pattern including a right turn, left turn, and about turn, and then walking through a group of other people milling about, and also walking past one other dog. It's all about the loose leash, not formal heeling position.

I am not personally involved in IPO, but from what I have seen, I would say the BH seems to involve more skills and a longer attention span from the dog than the CGC.

But back to your questions, Daniel, you are not required to have either of these titles before training or titling in nosework, if that's what you want to do. I do think the CGC and/or the BH are great foundations, though, for any dog, for any discipline you plan to train.

Likewise, if you want to go into AKC-style tracking, you do not need any prerequisites.

This is a GSD pup you got from a breeder, right? And if I'm remembering correctly from some of your other posts, the pup's parents do nosework, and the breeder is encouraging you to do the same? Are you not getting any help from the breeder in determining how to go about this? Seems like he or she should be able to answer a lot of your questions about the differences in the sports and how you would go about getting started.

As you are new to all of this, I strongly suggest finding a reputable dog training facility in your area that offers classes in the sports you are interested in. There is a limit to how much you can learn through videos or discussion forums. It's hard to beat hands-on, in-person class time with a knowledgeable and experienced instructor.

I've seen both videos and they are excellent.

I've only seen a couple of those books and they don't really address the NACSW type nose work.
