Maybe Laddy can be restricted to a place cot or some other area when he's just hanging out with you? Since he's still "under command" he'll be less likely to be a jerk but he can still relax. It might also help you to gain a reprieve since you "did something" about the dog.
While training dogs that boss their owners around I'll sometimes deliberately irritate a dog a bit before giving a command while being ready to correct him for not complying but it's likely to get you bit if you read the dog wrong and go too far. I basically treat it like just another form of proofing.
It is a GOLDMINE of extremely Valuable Training lessons, and might save Laddy's life -- It's all about living & working with Big TOUGH Dogs ... Worth every penny of the price & you can't go wrong in getting it.
