I've been to Flinks and Balabanov seminars and having only seen Michael Ellis'videos I easily put him quantum leaps ahead of the others.

thanks for posting that link tanya. . .
Ian, your BC looks a whole lot like a Canaan Dog that I had back in the mid-70s, except mine had a rather tightly curled tail & "spoke" Hebrew

Ian, I've been following this thread with interest. I admire your courage and ambition in taking such a major step to pursue your dream. And what a wonderful wife you have! That's a great photo of you and Henry. Best of luck to you, and keep the updates coming when you're able.

well , just finished obedience intensive , and ya , it was intensive .
this course encompasses basically all the fundamental ingredients you need to master prior to actually starting obedience training , which starts later in the program .
so much information and theory to take in , but really the most challenging part is learning the physical mechanics that the handler needs to process and have incorporated into muscle memory , so that when you are actually working with the dog , your mind is free to read the dog and the situation , and your physical reactions are automatic .
thanks for all the support guys . i'm having a beer right now in the training room watching some of the staffers work their dogs . one of my goals coming down here was to get as much " dog " time in as i can and you can all be rest assured i'm doing my best to meet your expectations , as i know you all would if you were here .
i can't believe the three weeks has passed already and i'm already dreading the day i have to leave .

Good on you, Ian. I can't wait to hear your perspective on how this training has helped with your interactions with your dog and those of others. From reading all your posts over that past several years, it's become obvious, at least to me, that you are already extremely engaged with your dog and have taken training and understanding of dog behavior to levels few have achieved. It will be real interesting to hear how this added training with Michael Ellis has enhanced that.

well , we're now at four weeks down , eight to go .
just finished " management " week , where you learn what to do with your dog so you can live with him while the training is ongoing .
big lesson here : if you are training a " pet " dog , and that is all it will ever be ( not a bad thing ) you can start placing rules and behaviors on the dog a lot sooner than you would with a dog that is being raised for sport , protection , SAR , etc . this is so you maintain the drive in the dog , but also requires a lot more diligence on the part of the owner/trainer/handler to manage the environment and influences to dog is exposed to .
this week : motivation , where we learn how to get the most out of " playing " with the dog .

Awesome! I have to try that someday! I now have a 6mo old baby at home, kids in school, and giant husband child that would starve without me so I am coveting the course at Leerburg university right now. Aries was my valentine gift....so maybe christmas/ birthday.:-)
I'll bet it's going to be hard to leave! They are probably starting to feel like family.

you are right nicole . . . after about a week i was already dreading having to leave . and the school is one thing , but i'll be leaving sunny california , and heading straight back into wet , cold whistler and another ski season , which ain't so bad , but after 45 years of it this climate certainly has its' appeals . . . shorts and t-shirts every day !
i have some great classmates ; 4 other folks who are as equally committed to this endeavour as i am , and then every week we get a new crop who are just there for that particular course , or several , in a few cases .
last weekend we had the world champion dock diver here ( happens to be an Ellis bred malinois ) and his trainer who came up from san diego to train a couple of local dogs . made for a great sunday afternoon , sitting under the shade tree , drinking beer and watching dogs flying through the air .
