Good grief, you paint an excellent picture! Ever considered writing?
I know it's very serious and I don't mean to be insensitive, but I was getting a pretty good laugh reading that.

Did you mean a Hot Shot? A cattle prod? They are heavy in your hand (batteries) and not very long. They will throw a spark a little way - if the batteries are new.
A sorting stick is just a fiberglass pole with a grip like a golf club. They are light and held against your body are not threatening.
A Hot Shot is too much.

Ditto with Betty on the hot shot.
The aggressive dog would be hard to target unless it was practically on top of you or very very close.
By then you or your dog would be bitten.
You also never know how some dogs will react to the hot shot. Could be, like some dogs and the e-collar, it would only raise the level of aggression in the dog.

I'm not familiar with a hot shot. Are you talking about my pepper spray?
So a sorting stick wouldn't help me be less reliant on pepper spray when rollerblading?

I have to keep my pepper spray as a last resort for when I am on walks with the baby.
I had only needed to use it 2 times in 2 years. There was the bull mastiff I mentioned and a little dog that was actually a fluke. I usually go running with Aries every night and what looked like a miniature pinscher mixed with chihuahua charged us. It was unleashed but being supervised by owners on front porch. I had my earphones in and it was getting dark outside so I didn't see it until it was too late..in "the red zone" as Candi coined it. Ever since that night I have only worn earphones in one ear to prevent that.
I just need to find a way to be more effective on my own to rely less on the pepper spray while rollerblading. If not the sorting stick, maybe the ski pole would make me more convincing to a dog?

Late return on this - Gopro is a mountable camera. In my area, it is legal for a dog to be offleash but NOT to harrass people or other dogs in the roadway - my thoughts on video would be if my dogs ever get their teeth on the damned ankle biters that people leave to run amok. I want to immediately be able to document any situation for my own animals' protection. Unfortunately I am not talented enough to shoot video while holding 2 dogs in one hand with a strange dog rushing us I think the ski pole is a great idea for multiple reasons.

I think if you had a sorting stick you'd never need the pepper spray.
All dogs fear a long pole, extension of the arm, which comes from above, which they don't see, aren't clued into until it either touches them or is waved at their face. It does not elicit anger but respect.
Check them out at the farm store. They cost about $7.00.

Yeah, humor is a great educational tool -- And even though we can all get a good laugh at a scenario like that, it's much too true for comfort, unfortunately ... At the end of the day, most people will simply choose to blame the Big "MEAN" Dog, no matter what really happened

I ran into the Pomeranian's owner on Aries' morning walk, and we talked.
Here's my version Candi and Aries played right into it, predictable, well behaved, gentleman dog that he is..
Oh, maam, I'm so glad I get to talk to you! Is your dog okay? It was TERRIBLE.
I was rollerblading by, minding my own business when this crazed little dog chases me down yapping, snorting, and snarling. (All while Aries stands there calmly, not aggressive nor interested in saying hello)
I quickly move to a yard so this unleashed creature can't trip me and make me break my arm (in 2 places), and yell at it to back off but it keeps coming at me!
I hate think what would happen if I let it attack my dog and me! And, golly, what would happen if I were walking like today and had the baby with me?!
Okay, so I'm not as talented as you, Candi!
Seriously though, we talked, I told her what happened, and everything worked out.
