How a dog stands often makes a difference in nail wear. If they rock back on their feet a bit, the nails tend to be longer. Sometimes nail length can be indicative of structural issues or injuries.
When my brother got his present dog (Presa Canario) it was 3 yrs old and he was told the only problem the dog had was doing it's nails.
No vet or groomer would attempt it after one try and the original owner said she had to hog toie the dog and it roared the whole time.
Within a couple of weeks with marker training the dog now falls asleep on his side while his nails are being done.
I've used a Dremel tool on my dogs nails for the past 30-40 yrs.
When I had Kerry blue terriers (thick, wavy coat like a poodle) I would stick the paw through an old pantihose with the nails poking through order to keep the hair from catching in the Dremel.
