But now he is in the hands of a person who thinks about the different possible causes of her problem. Check it out. This will not be easy for certain. But this dog who has never had the possibility to build a real bond with someone or once he had it was again and again disappointed, will with your care and help be able to build a strong relationship with you. I'm convinced about this. Just give him the time he needs. I have a former stray, whom I could not touch in the beginning without wincing or snapping about me. It's a bit more than two years since, but now he comes and pushes himself between my legs. I can gently touch him everywhere and he is LEARNING!!!, although the Vet predicted he was UNTRAINABLE!
Believe in him, believe that dogs can build new and strong bonds! I wish you all patience and luck.

What about feeding? Do you leave food out, feed on a schedule, or feed on demand?
Like others, I don't feel like it is sound to deprive a dog of a safe space. Personally, once I had eliminated any health issues and overriding concerns about abusive treatment in his past, I would let him have all the space he wants, but have him come to me to ask to be fed. One of the most significant roles that I play in my dog's life is that of provider, and she knows where to find me when she wants something. Once you develop that level of relationship, then you can start to expect or even demand more.

Duane, he gets one meal every evening, we tried splitting it to morn/ evening feeding, but he won't touch it in the morning, so he gets his full meal, to which I leave down for less than 20 min, he gets free water all day, but if the food is not done, it goes away, to be brought down the next day.
We leave his crate open all day, in case he wants to chill in there, but we can't let him against the walls, as he is wrecking the paint..I am currently working on making a backing with vinyl over it, to put against a wall so he can meld again, until than, he will just have to bear with me.
I think I may bring out the giant dog bed again, and see if he would like that as a safe place! Wouldn't hurt to try!

Becky, I don't think you mentioned what type of collar Jazz wears, but would it be an option for you to change it to something of a softer material that would not scratch the walls so much?

It is a soft nylon, its the buckle that keeps scraping, we tried a harness with the same result, going leashless in the house is not an option yet, as he has to be lead outside for potty breaks, off lead he sneaks off and has to be slowly followed to catch. I could try with the slip lead, I have the thin blue one from Leerburg.

Duane, you let your dog come to you ask for being fed? Do you really when he comes asking give him something. I know it's all a question of the individual dog, but if I'd do this, all my dogs would be totally fat. For mine I need a certain rhythm. they only get fed during training. They are used to this now. If I wouldn't do it like this, they'd come begging all the time.

NO, Christina. You miss the point. I do not feed my dog on demand. My dog gets a very specific diet and fed at exactly 6 am and 6 pm. If the clock gets to 602, she starts reminding me. Some days, she starts reminding me at 545.
My suggestion was not about feeding on request. My suggestion was about building trust by teaching the dog that I am the provider. I would let the dog have his crate, as much as he wants. He can stay in there and avoid interaction, but he will get hungry, and when he gets hungry, he will come to me for food.
Has worked for me on cats, too.

So now, to top our week off, we are dealing with stress induced colitis..sometimes I just wonder why mother nature is such a mean thing. He thankfully enjoys psyllium husk, but is now been put on a 36 hour fast to give his colon time to decrease inflammation..
Totally throws off the big ol dog bed..as he is not capable of telling us when he has to go..so back to the crate for the next two days..
He picked a bad week, as the temps are gorgeous here, to be ill, woulda been great trail weather!

Oh that's great Duane. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Lol, worked for your cats too? When I was living in Switzerland I had at least 35 cats (not at the same time of course, 5 at a time the most.) I was lucky to to teach them feeding times. I was free feeding and not a single one ate too much. Some liked to nibble just a tiny little bit but frequently during the day, others ate 1 to 3 times bigger portions, but never more than they needed.
