Is he stressed more than usual? Or in more pain? Colitis has horrid flare ups with stress.
Hope things work out!
With colitis I found smaller meals more frequent, with the dog a bit elevated, and kept that way, worked better than just a bowl placed. But age may nix that.

And psyllium husk worked wonders with Jazz, he had stress induced colitis, the vomiting stopped with the psyllium. But the colitis never did.

The vet did not test for giardia. The colitis has been intermittent for 6 years or so with mucousy stools, the odd one showing scant frank blood. He did come to us as a rescue, v. underweight, probably with parasites. Since we have had him, he is never out of our sight, has no access to standing or contaminated water and ample fresh water available. The yard is patrolled for poop once or more times a day and he doesn't share the yard with any other dogs. Would his course of metronidazole not have treated giardia? (Getting him to the vet is no trivial exercise given his size and his age-related stiffness).
Of greater concern is the fact that he is still vomitting part of his morning feed, hours after ingestion, with some regularity. He still has an appetite most of the time and is drinking well. His stools have returned to a normal consistency.
RE, Giardia: I only know what's available to read about it online, but...
It's not at all uncommon in a Rescue dog -- They can go for YEARS being totally symptom-free ... Then suddenly present with the types of diarrhea you describe, either acute, chronic, or on-again-off-again /// IIRC, giardia has a very Specific Treatment, not a "one size fits all" dewormer (but I would study the article in Connie's link above, and ask your Vet about that).

As Candi says, giardia can hang on for a loooong time. Googling recurring, or chronic, or persistent giardia is an eye-opener that surprised me years ago.
Also, here's some more basic info.
http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/be-on-guard-against-giardia
(BTW, I ran across the same irritating auto-correct that I suspect Betty did (her post said "I second the guardian concern") when I tried to post the word "giardia" ... autocorrect wanted it changed to "guardian.")
But I too would wonder whether the course of metronidazole mentioned should have resolved any giardiasis. I'm not a health professional and I don't know the answer. Maybe a call to the vet's office just to check might be in order. JMO!

Good advice Candi, good link Conni. I can emphasize this out of my own exoerience. Not the dogs, but we ourselves,my usband and I had diarrhea during decades of our life only twice, and it had other reasons. But since we live here in Brazil it happens too often. Recently I had a very bad one, had to keep myself in bed 7/24 just in order to reach quickly the WC when i felt the next launch.
As we had never been prone to this, we didn't take it very seriosly, but now we consulted the Vet and he said we had both parasites and reproached us for coming so late. We are well now, but I have learned to be more cautious in another country.
It should be taken really seriosely.
Sorry, this is not directly connected to dogs, but although dogs have a better system of antitoxins than humans, we have to observe this very thoroughly, if it happens to them. Once they catch it, it might be a real danger for them.

No, no change to his routine, not under any stressors that I am aware of but he is old and possibly does have arthritic pain. Wondering about giving him Deramaxx more often. Haven't been giving it regularly because was worried that it might be causing symptoms.
Vomitting seems to have stopped (for the moment) but will go back to feeding smaller, more frequent meals.
Will ask vet re giardia. I think diagnosis was based largely upon character of stool which was extremely mucousy, which feature was not mentioned in the articles.
As always, great advice. (Will also get some psyllium).

Colitis makes gross poop. The psyllium will make it look funny, almost wormy, gummy weird looking, but helps bind up the poop.
You can sprinkle it on the dry, or mix it with some water and toss it on the food.
I prefer with water, as who wants to inhale dry husks. Start with a quarter tsp. You don't want to give too much too soon. After a week, move to half a tsp. A tbsp would be your goal.

Sorry for that stupid mistake. I meant " we consulted the doctor"

Glad to hear! So it at least contributed a bit to the general entertainment.
