I'll give some thoughts. For detection work (scenting) selecting dogs from a rescue might be ok. Selecting dogs from a rescue for police patrol, protection, or sport work is STUPID. Why would you want to do that? It is hard enough to find a good dog from real working breeders or importers.
VanCamp there is always a chance of a diamond in the ruff. There is a huge population of dogs that can be evaluated, some of these dogs are very hard, lived hard lives and they might make the grade. Who knows there may even be German line dogs in shelters that pet owners had no idea of what they are getting in with crazy drives. Yea I do agree with you, its remote but possible.
Maybe Richard can give you something to help you sleep. A 2.44 AM post I’m getting to worry about you.
Milt
Dogs from all backgrounds land in shelters or rescues - I imagine some people want to use rescues to give them another chance. I have seen several in the US passing the evaluations and going on to police forces from rescue.
A local breeder found a "fully-trained" 3 year old POLICE DOG at a shelter recently.
The breeder told me that she was too much dog for the handler and was extremely destructive (neurotic)...
So, naturally he bred her and marketed the litter as "top quality working lines"...then sold her for $500.
Remote chances here guys- Kate Moss slim, thin like water, one in a who-the-hell-knows-how-many. You got better chances of seeing Ed add a few White GSDs to his breeding program than finding the "ideal good police dog". IM(not so humble)O
My business runs 24 hours a day Milt, you never know when I'm up. Maybe Ricardo can give you some downers to help with the VanCamp anxiety problem.
Not as remote as you would think Van Camp - quite a few in the US have had good results - I know police and sherrifs depts in Texas, Iowa, Wisconsin and Maryland in particular have used rescue dogs, I am sure other have as well.
I obviously know nothing of the personnel's skills but I know they use and continue to test and use rescues that are either owner surrenders or pulled from shelters.
I'm not sure if this is possible.Reading the post on the breeding section the recessive gene has been brought up many times. Why does this recessive gene have to be bad. Why can't it be a good gene that brings the dog back to the original working heritage?
