Kevin, atleast most of the Mal doesn't look like a dog up front and a frog in the back, heh heh,. I had both and like both, 2 things I like about my first Mal more than all my other GS is that this Mal does not like to eat his own poop 2 of my GS thinks that poop is thanksgiving dinner , and seems to sheds less, I think Mal only sheds twice a year, all of my GS sheds all year and all the time.

That's only the showlines...besides, at least they still look kinda like a dog, rather than the Mal who looks like an overgrown Chihuahua!

Sorry mali lovers. But with all due seriousness mals are fun to work and my K-9 Unit has four mals, one GSD (mine) and a Tuerv.
So, I certainly don't think poorly of them. But come now, when it comes to looks there is only one working breed that can give you a decent looking dog that can really work. Too bad it is getting harder and harder to find. And, that is why the ugly shepherd (read: malinois) have become so popular in just a few short years.
It is why I loudly proclaim things like "the golden middle ain't so golden", "viva ttwo populations of GSD's", and be proud of kklII on your working GSD, grey is gorgeous (that has nothin' to do with my grey hair) and a host of other sayings in support of the working GSD.
Kevin-you're killing me!!! Love my red dogs...don't ever have to wind them up to go to work! I guess we get the kind of dog that fits our personalities...hyper handler=red dog...old dude w/ gray hair = GSD guide dog.
Seriously, I have watched both of my mals work circles around our shepherds & take perverse satisfaction that the girl (me)has the best dog They last longer in the heat & humidity than the shepherd, don't break down as much (hips/elbows), but there seems to be alot of back/disc injuries in the mals as compared to GSD's. They can also be a quirky bunch. My retired mal is a complete 180 from my current mal..but ya gotta love it!! Always keeps you on your toes
Having had more than a few sable GSDs over the years, and two Malinois. . .
. . .I much prefer people mistaking the dog for a wolf. . .than a jackal.
Honestly, having had both dogs I don't notice any difference in the good Mal or GSD. They can both have the same good working traits and bad ones. If you can put up with the crazy azz behavioral problems that come with the Mals though, I think they are a bit more healthy and long lived on average.
