So sorry Mr Cannon for posting such false and dangerous information here. Geez I was 3 years old when that movie came out. I probably was about 7 or 8 when I saw it on TV. Who cares about what was wrong with the dogs? I described it the way I remembered it when I was a kid. It is only a movie, you know, designed for entertainment? No need to get all uptight about it. It's not as dangerous as passing uninformed breeding info or anything.
Richard, is there some kind of dog related "weakest link" book out there, where do you find this stuff? I would like to follow up on many of the things you post.
The tree of Freedom needs to be nurtured with the blood of Patriots and tyrants. Thomas Paine
No kidding Trooper, my favorite so far was the chinese sleeve-dog protection glove, or whatever that crap was. Then there was the saimese cat-walk defense, and nearest and dearest to his heart- the fart attack trained mini-anklebiter-schnauzer. And you guys make wise cracks about ME being on medication? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
When you live in a lot of places and are involved in a lot things (and have a memory for totally usless information), this stuff just shows up.
The AKC breed histories is a wealth of information. Being interested in the history of breeds you are involved with helps to understand what they should be. It makes it easier to maintain a better example of the breed.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
Richard, whilst I fully agree with your comments on the films, one statement puzzled me and that was that they didnt bark during the attack. Why is this essential,we train attack dogs not to bark when deployed to stop a person, often the silent approach can be the surprise element that is needed to prevent any defence against the dog.
Paul
That was a comment about those particular dogs, not the breed in general. I met the trainer for those dogs as well as the dogs at a demonstration they did in San Deigo years ago. The point is that those particular dogs were "actors", not trained protection/attack dogs.
I agree with you about the barking. In fact the best Giant I had rarly barked. He would just move into position, silently, with apparent the idea to not alert the target of his aggression so as not to give them an oppotunity to rub away before he got his bites in.

Richard,
We agree on that one,its not so clever to have a dog barking its head off when it goes in,as you say it gives that split second warning which can be fatal.
As for the film, well for what its worth,I think both the film and the training were excellent,as long as people realise it was make belief, but if I was an actor,I would think twice if they were for real.LOL

I'm really glad to read the information here. I've always wanted a Doberman ever since I was very young. I don't know if I'll ever have one or not, but I seriously hope a few breeders out there can turn this breed around. From the few kennels that have been mentioned they seem to be doing a very good job. At the very least I really hope to see the Doberman become a competitive contender again in protection sports, as well as legit home guardian (on a consistent basis) I know they're are a few legitimate ones out there. I hope there can be more soon.
When I see several of the dogs out there from the Schutzhund videos I've seen, I really think this can happen again. Good luck to all the Doberman people on the board.
