I know that picture you are describing. My neighbor got a German line dobe puppy the same time I got my puppy. I didn’t really know much about dobes before that except for what I heard in the 70’s. The pups became best friends and played together every night. I for one became a big fan of dobes at least this one. I used to look over the fence and watch that dog; it was like he was always thinking.

O.K. lets get to the point, I am looking for a Dobe for friend. I have stumbled onto a conundrum. Where do I go for a quality Dobe without getting ripped off? This pup is going to a first time handler and we will be doing sport work with it. We have looked at all the recommended sites and found favor with Blitzkrieg. My friend has reservations about buying a puppy sight unseen. Any one have dealings with Deanna from Blitzkrieg, either possitive of negative? She appears to have excellent stock with all the required bases covered, i.e. hips, cataract,vWD etc. I need some help here, the sooner the better. I will check with the CKC to see what they will say.

When did the ear cropping crap in Germany happen? What nations allow the docking of tails but not ears? If a Dobe puppy is marked for export, will the breeder / breeder vet crop ears?

Ear cropping has been banned for along time now in Germany. Tail docking has been banned for about 3 years give or take. The only dogs allowed to be docked are the hunting breeds. It is even illegal to import a docked dog into Germany even if it was legal in the country of origin I believe. This is evident in the world show in Holland where dogs with cropped ears may be entered if their owners live in a country where there is no cropping ban.

One of the main reasons you see few Dobe Police Service Dogs is first of all lack of availability.
Good working line GSD's are a dime a dozen, a Dobe pup from working lines in America is going to cost you $1500, AND be hard to find, bottom line. As has been previously discussed, their popularity led to thousands of backyard breeders and eventually the distruction of their working ability, which was their original purpose! The original Dobe was so protective, people wanted the "Viscious" tendencies bred out of them. Imagine walking through the suburbs, get to close to a fence and a snarling Dobe comes lunging at the fence foaming at the mouth. Not good PR. I choose the Dobe for ease of trainability. As far as Im concerned they are still the best looking and smartest dogs. I love the GSD's at my club, but I can't stand long-haired dogs shedding all over the place, and I think they are kind of ugly, but I love their personalities. Personal opinion. The problem is Dobes are NOT for everyone. Anyone who has seen a skiddish Dobe or one without good working drives in
America can think the money-hungry general public, the AKC, and these fancy show-Dobe breeders who churn out prancy, greyhound looking crap.

I have corresponded by mail several times whit deanna, I also bought a tape from here whit many of the dobes in here lines working, policetraining and SCHtrails and training in germany whit many of the most famous workingdobes from the mid 80s and forward. She seems to be a honest and nice person, If you look for a dobe for sportwork her dogs sure have what it takes.

Deanna Anslow (Blitzkrieger) is a really nice lady. She has gone to alot of expense to do some of the breedings she has done. She has bred to some of the greats (Gero M, Gero W, Bronco, Ilo) She also studies the breed bloodlines better than anyone else in Nth America.

aah Lonny, yes i was feelin a bit out there when i posted this. anti-inflammatory med was spacing me out there for 3 days.

the breeds popularity for mostly show is somewhat evident here in the Northeast. at local shows there are more Dobes registered than any other breed with the exception of the labs, boxers also high up there; however it is rare to see one anywhere else. i go to Petco with him and people react like they have never seen one.
yes, the temperment has been toned down for the very reason of what kind of owners are requesting them, pet and show. a pet Dobe from show lines is going for an average of $1,000-1,100. Show and Shutzund average 1,500 - 2,000.

I bet you get some reaction at Petco, they are a wicked looking animal for sure, like I said, I call them the devil dog because they look like a perfect poster child for the devil's pet haah but that is what makes them great, I got that same kind of attention when I walk my Rott, I even get some people act that way when I walk my GSD pup if you can believe that!
