My daughter had a wonderful Rottie. It was a good thing he was so fearsome cause if he couldn't scare the bad guys he sure wasn't gonna be able to chase them to far.
Now my little SAR Aussie smokes the GSDs at the St. Louis Police K9 Training Center agility course. Course she runs lots faster when they are behind her.
Agility Champion, Please 1 in a million. Not saying it not so but they can't be competing against Agility champs like the Border Collies, Austrial Shepherds, Jack Russles and Mid-size Lassies (I forgot what there called) these are the dogs that tear up the agility course. The GSD can do it but even they are not the top players.
IMO taking a Rottie to a Agility course hoping to win is like riding a tri-cycle in the DeTour DeFrance you'll finish but far back in the pack. It ain't gonna be easy.
Why not use the Hummvee for what its good for plowing up fields and mowing things over. The Rottie is a great protection and estate guardian, its strength is its strength and presence of strength. Personally I can't read their body reaction or face as well as I can the GSD or Dobbies. They look like I'm gonna kick your ass all the time in the face and they don't have a tail, their ears are up when they are happy or mad??? Some people use to call them devil dogs or was that the Dobbie?
Besides the Doberman (if call a Dobe a Mastiff) the Rottie is the only Matsiff that is ranked in the top 10 of intelligent dogs going by the 1 test. I am impress with this dog, more so before it was the No. 1 dog in the USA. That almost dooms a breed.
We agree its a great dog, we split on what its good at, but agility please.
Not out there to be a champ, out there to show that they can do it, and do it well! No arguement that they cant make time over a border collie, but they sure can pull great times and qualify doing it!
Haha Meg ready set go!
Well just to add a lil somethin here...I'll also admit they'll never be able to compete against border collies and shelties BUT almost any dog can do it...my Annabel is proof of that! She's a newfie (okay, a small one at 110 pounds) but she's FAST! people always assume she's slow and then are shocked by how well she does. not too great on the tight turns and everything but hey, we have fun. isn't that the important thing?
How close are their scores to lets say a 35-45lb border collie compared to the 110lbs Newfies? Can you buy coffee in between the minutes, from BST to NFT kinda like daylight saving time, huh.
I guess anything can happen, if you not going out to win. But I wouldn't call it competition, more like just showing up.
I guess they get a "E" for effort must be the darness sight. They loop when they walk, how can they climb a slide fast and balance down the other side???
I currently have two 12 month old Rottie puppies. Our male is 27" and 103#. His little sister is 23" and 77#. There is definately a big difference between the two as far as speed and agility goes. Our female is much faster and more agile than her brother.
We show both puppies in conformation and our male is so much larger than the other puppies his age that he doesn't do very well right now. That may change as he matures and starts to fill out. To be honest though we are showing them more for the experience than anything else. It has been great for them to get them out and around so many different people and dogs. I am more interested in putting obedience titles on my dogs rather than conformation. We also do herding and will be starting tracking soon.
Go Carol! Sounds like you'll be busy with your guys! I'm out there for the thrill and the experience too, its so much more laid back, and I'm really enjoying just watchin my boy learn so fast!
