Guard dog and PP dog are two seperate things in my book. Guard dog in that example was an American Bulldog, thrown in their yard to protect and deter criminals with no formal training, socializing, etc. I guess they got what they wanted. The kid who was 10-12, heavyset for his age, ran thru their back yard to their backdoor to tell his buddy something. The dog attacked him and ripped open his leg pretty badly. The example was against the type of fencing, not against PP trained dogs. The training and time spent on perfecting the skills of a PP dog make it a world away from the average guard dog.
Okay, that makes sense. Perhaps I need to work on my terminology.
The example that you mention above further illustrates my dilemma. This dog sounds like it would be just as much a risk to family and friends as to bad guys; but would a well trained PPD have done the same under the same circumstances?
Maybe the topic of what triggers a well-trained PP dog to be aggressive is a subject for a new thread.
