I think alot of credit, if not all, goes to the handler of a dog. There are alot of good schutzhund dogs out there but what makes the dog a champion comes down to the skill of the handler. Vice versa there are alot of shit handlers that should just do something else.
Alot of these top handler/trainers take a good scoring dog and make it a very high scoring dog...thats the skill, it shines in those situations.
I have also seen some nice dogs come over at 290's and are now at 240's....that goes to the handler as well.
I believe these top handlers can do it from a pup just the same, and many have in the past, but it involves a greater amount of time and effort.
I do like the HOT though because you see what the dog becomes and that is all from you....it is a walking, breathing example of your skill.
Just my opinion...

That's why I think, personally, that Ivan is the true winner, Django is H.O.T., not a "bought dog".
I agree. Django was not only raised from a pup and trained by Ivan, Django is also a product of Ivan's breeding program.
Incidentally, the second highest scoring H.O.T. dog at the Nationals was my husband's young GSD Artemis vom Kiefern Tal (90-91-95=276)... aka "Lodi"... who recently turned 3 y.o. We got Lodi at 8 weeks to be a companion dog... Douglas decided he'd give this SchH thing a try... hey, what a blast, the dog's pretty good at it! This is Douglas's first GSD and first SchH dog. His protection & OB coach is Ivan.
The highest scoring female H.O.T. handler was Asheley Lane, handling the youngest dog at the Nationals (94-90-88). Asheley also trains with Ivan when she is able to.
There have been a number of high scoring H.O.T. handlers who have been coached by Ivan... Kelly Martin, Martha Hoffman, Susanna Suomensaari, & Kathy O'Brian come to mind.

What Ivan has done has not been done by many people in the world. My hat is off to him.

Laura I have to chime in here.....I saw Artemis and talked to Doug (Laura's husband) when he signed up to have his performance video taped. Not only did he give a wonderful performance, he was a super nice guy and a great sportsman.
I sat with Bernhard Flinks during Doug and Lodi's obedience routine and he was very impressed with Doug and his dog. He gave commands in a soft tone (no screaming commands that are so common in this sport) and you could sense the great repoire this dog/handler team have. It was one of the highlights of the weekend for me. At the time I watched I had no idea this was a first time handler with a dog raised from a puppy......I also met the handler's parents who flew in from Texas to watch...
They were a joy to watch and are what this sport should be about.
Their protection routine was great too!!

Thanks for the nice comments about Artemis and my husband Douglas. It's good to know that others can see the great relationship that this team has.
Douglas was incredibly nervous during their OB routine. Artemis is sensitive to that, and it made for a routine that was less focused and precise than they normally do. Afterwards, Ivan told Douglas that most of the points the team lost in OB were because he was so nervous. Ivan said the handler must be the leader of the team during trials just as s/he is during training. Douglas agreed and took this advice to heart. The next morning when they did their protection routine, Douglas was a confident team leader... with the attitude that together they are going to "kick that helper's butt"

Craig Wandtke's dog Xorro is owner , handler trained... He got the dog at 11 months with no training.. he was the high protection dog for the nationals this year. Craig's first dog.. and first big competition... 99 points! and it was an awesome picture of power and control... unfortunetly he was on at 6:30 in the morning!

Sometimes dogs are bought with very poor scores and the new trainer brings those scores up..and sometimes they are bought with big scores and down they go with the new trainers! Ivan did a great job.. as did Deb Zappia. Both these folks are very consistant with their training.. you can tell a dog that has been trained by them..

Jody,
Do you know if Leerburg filmed Craig & Xorro's protection routine? I heard it was a spectacular performance, but a lot of us missed it since it was so early in the morning.

Yes, Ed did film Craig's protection. I did not see it but heard it was super. I did see Doug and his dog and I would say it was a super routine. Out of all the dogs I saw this weekend his was the one that stuck out in my mind the most. Artemis's hold and bark impressed me more than any other dog's there. A big congrats to him and his dog..Nice job.
