I was under the impression that the prong provided pain in a "safe for the dog manner" when used correctly of course. That's the whole point (no pun intended) of the thing aint it? PAIN!
Leute mögen Hunde, aber Leute LIEBEN ausgebildete Hunde!
A choke collar is made to create some pain. The pinch will create the same amount of correction with less pressure. The E collar was first put to use commercialy by Tri-Tronics. (I believe) It can, but was not intended to create pain. The books, tapes and seminars done by tri-tronics state" if the animal vocalizes in any way,go to a lower setting" It was made to proof and polish, not teach or punish.
When my dogs see me bring out the collar, they get fired up and come running becouse they know they are going to get to do what they were ment to do,Work.
This is the first time I've ever used a prong collar. I have two dogs and use it on both. I think it is magic! All those commands I taught them, they really know! I rarely have to 'correct' them with it, all I have to do is put it on. Now to get them to listen w/o the prong  Wait till I get the E-collar!
And now the analogy, unlike some of the children nowadays, when I was naughty, my dad gave me an a$$ whooping. No regrets. It's all about discipline, how it is dispensed and the temperment of the 'child'.
Thoreau said, "Every man is my superior in that I can learn from him."
That's my reason for being here, to learn. In my case it appears to be every man and woman.
I appreciate all the input from each of you, including criticism of my own opinions. I probably will not change what I've been doing for fifty plus years, but I will learn the methods used by others and, as a result, have a broader understanding of things.
Hell, I might even try the e-collar again. Who knows?
Using a prong caller isnt like walking barefoot through rode pedals either and I didnt mean to imply that. Some times pain is involved I said that in a follow up post. My point being " in obed" that some people who train with a prong collar use it like revenge or a weapon. My point was thats not how to use it!What Ive found in my training is if I spend some time getting the dog to learn some basic things inducively first I can then turn the screws up and bring out the prong collar and teach the dog that things have changed a little bit ,now you gotta do it.The dog seems to recover pretty quick from the corrections and they discover they are doing the same old things that they were doing happily before and the prong collar isnt an issue.Like I said Im talking about obed.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
I understand you David. Used properly the prong collar is a fine tool. I have never had a dog that resented having the collar applied to his neck. They had not felt abuse from me with or without it.
I did have one, that had been severely abused with a choke chain, though a treatment called windmilling. I learned right away that to attempt to put a choke chain on that dog was very damgerous. He would bite anyone attempting to slip a chain over his head. I worked him in a prong collar, which he accepted readily, and later, when I had his confidence, reintroduced him to the choke chain to prevent someone from someday loosing an arm.
The Prong collar is by far the best thing I have ever bought for anything. Best $20 dollars I have ever spent and If I knew it would work as well as it does I would have happily payed more. My uncle absolutely dispises it and thinks I'm a cruel owner, he just doesn't get it and thinks that the way I train her (like not letting her jump around and get over excited when she sees people) is a bad thing, I follw a lot of the advice i get form this board and the breeder so I just shrug off all he has to say because I know it's senseless. Anyways I recommend the prong to ALL dog owners. Just make sure you still mean business when it is not in use, my dog was starting to feel "cocky" when it was off but a few good pops knocked some reality into her.
I know, I just happen to run across it and decided to put my two cents just incase anybody looked upon it like I did. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
