A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down. - Robert Benchley
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. - Edward Hoagland
Good responses to this question. But I have another question along these lines. My dog (11 month old Shepherd) will do a recall across the field. I am now working on a recall from a down. He is the type of dog who does not like to have close physical contact, how can I get a close sit front? I know this could eventually be a probalem in the dumbell retrieve also as he sits about 4 feet from me. I have used a long line, but it does not help. Should I have someone else do the long line while I call him to me? Pinch collar or flat collar?
Have you consistently thrown the ball away from you? Sounds like you have always thrown the ball away from you as a reward. If thats the case the dog has ben taught that the reward is always some where other than you.First you have to give the dog a reason to want to be close to you and feel comfortable.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!

I have found when you feed if you jingle keys. While you are feeding the dog/pup will think it's going to get fed. I also jingle keys to start my puppy to come to me. No matter what he is doing once he hears the keys he comes running to me. I give a lot of praise and then a treat. Then I start to add here. I do this in a fence yard. If I was in the open I put a 30 foot check line on him. and the reel him to me. If an adult dog I use the line and a prong collar. Start out close then go more distance once he is sure with coming to me. Always have treats or have 2 balls for training the come. Use as a reward once he comes to me.
