Even after nuetering an adult, the adrenal gland still produces some testosterone, acording to my vet, so there is still some hormonal activity in this area. At three, motivational training is probably not enough with a strong, dominant dog. It's time for a little tough love. Maby a prong, or squrit him.-----I was going to put up a smiley face, but a squrit might just do the trick.

He does, and you should thank him for keeping up in his professional education. Reference JAVMA issue 7/15/97 - I don't have it in front of me but I have read it and there was quite a significant decrease in marking behavior of males after gonadectomy REGARDLESS of the age at which it was performed.

Hi Oldearthdog, she does use a prong in the majority of her training, and when out walking. I didn't understand what you meant by 'squrit'? Squirt? But squirt what? I doubt squirting this dog with anything would slow him down : )

Todd is the "squirt master" You use a squirt bottle with water in it. When squirted in the face,it can be effective to divert the dogs attention if the dog isn't one of those that love to be squirted. If your friend is using a prong now, maby the corrections are to soft and this is a very hard dog. There is no reason, with proper corrections, the dog shouldn't be paying closer attention.

dobermann,
It was a joke.
OldE, I guess it depends on what you consider motivational training to be. I would argue that the presence or absence of the prong collar is not as important as firmness and consistency. You can use a prong collar inconsistently and still have the same training problems as being inconsistent with corrections and praise WITHOUT a prong. So, in effect, it's not the choice of tools so much as it is how consistently you apply corrections and praise. This is true with any dog, even dominant ones. The prong just gives you more physical control, but it will not automatically make you dominant.

Slightly off topic but a disadvantage to the SQUIRT.
When my GSD Blue was a puppy he would unload the washing machine when I'd be getting the washing out so he got squirted. After a few times I only had to pick up the container and he would immediatly stop
The down side to this is that I can't use the frontline spray on him now as he thinks he's being squirted.
I have to use the fontline spot on stuff which is a tad more expensive

Agreed. Domanance isn't overpowering the dog, it's attitude with consistancy. Going to work now.

If we get back to the original question I don´t think this dog should get his private parts cutted, you said he didn´t cause you any problem so why neuter the dog? There seems like many people neuter their dogs if they have some kind of problem with the dog, but in most cases it´s not the dogs fault, it´s the owners who can´t handler their dogs. It would be a good idea if people in the world of dogs tried to solve behaviour and mental problems with training and breeding instead of cutting the dogs. Sure there could be some dogs with extreme sexdrive that causes troubles, but don´t neuter the dog if you can solve the problems in other ways. I had a friend who neuterd his dog because he was marking inside, but that didn´t help a thing.

Thanks..I'll keep that in mind. I too don't wnat to get him neutered just for the sake of neutering him. I do have control over him; however, since none of us are perfect, if I am not alert he might pee on the tunnel or something. Right now he is not causing any problems at all; but, he is very very sharp.
