I like Ringsports post. I think he answered the question well. If you're too dumb to avoid hurting your own dogs, then don't play rough. If you can tone it down so you don't hurt 'em then I think you are OK.
I've heard plenty of opinions about messing around with your own dogs. It is a pleasure that I take, even IF it will affect some aspect of training adversly. Whats the fun of having dogs if you can't play with them. I think it also has a positive effect on trust. I won't hurt you, you won't hurt me. We are pals. . .
I do own some dogs that I just can't play like that with, so I don't. Under no circumstances do I want some dominate dogs to start testing their strength against me. I don't think you have that problem so. . .

You are correct about learning bite inhabition from littermates, however,it still has to be learned to apply to humans. Sch pups learn it from their littermates, but how many of them are, and are encouraged to be, "little alligators". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
A pup leaves the litter around 8 weeks. Bite inhibition training MUST continue beyond that time with other pups. The only way for the dog to learn when and how not to use his teeth is playtime with owner/handler, and redirecting mouthy behaviour to the appropriate item. Play, for me, was stopped if teeth were used on human flesh.
As a result of bite inhibition training at a young age I have a dog that plays with full mouth open, snapping (fang face look), jumping, playing tag, body checking, etc. and nary a red mark on my skin.
It should work with and be taught to any dog, PT trained or not.
