Hippie Dippie to me is saying that this author will next be saying that b ecouse the dog can think circles around us they deserve more rights than us.. God forbid at christmas I put raindeer antlers on them and violate there cival rights.
As for your dog looking guilty when you got home Thats not guilt. Its worry. He wouldnt act that way the first time. But after he got his butt whiped a few times, he knows whats coming and is fearful. Thats stimulas response, also called training.
Dogs probably can out think this author. But not normal intelligent people.

Doesn't seem like it requires any big stretch to imagine why the dog would orient on the helmet. A new plastic helmet has a pretty strong odor, especially to the dog. We all, including dogs, attend to what is new in our environment. Left alone, he noticed a new scent that didn't belong. He investigated, which of course has to include tasting and chewing , after all, he is just a dog. There's also the other possibility that he is a habitual counter-surfer and discovered this new toy in his surfing.

OK, Lee, so what about the pile of poop two feet away from it?

Oh, and Ron, why read sinister motives into everything? Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. As I said, I think the intent behind the article is to communicate to pet dog owners that dogs don't act out destructively out of spite or revenge, and that they don't "act guilty" because they "know they've done wrong", but rather act submissively because experience has taught them that mom or dad gets angry at dog when they come home. And, I never said anything about my dog acting guilty in the helmet incident. Just that he was nowhere to be seen when I got home. I'm not attibuting any awareness of right vs. wrong to that behavior.

....besides, I think the most sinister thing about that article was the black text on puple background.

I agree with Lee on this. New strong smell, which leads to further investigation, etc. But I still think the lab was marking by the helmet, unless he hadn't been out in a long time.
Do we know if he tried on the helmet? Now THAT would be thinking...

Yeah, I don't remember if I had taken him out or not...I know that I was gone for a while, getting the helmet, then basically had to turn right around and leave again, so it's possible that in my haste I neglected to give him the opportunity to relieve himself. He's really not the poop-marking type (though urine marking wouldn't be out of character), so that's probably it. I think Lee's probably right, too. As for hiding when I got home, I have *never* kicked his ass, but I have gotten kinda mad at him before.... He usually greets me at the door when I get home, though.

ANYhoo....
Does anyone agree that dogs "think"? I know this has been discussed here before, and I would posit that since dogs can learn, can problem solve, and can make decisions, that they can "think".

Poor Pavlov-all that training, and only drool to show for it...
Thats funny.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I don't think dogs think. What my definition of think is you guys will have to guess at cuz I'm not spending any more time on this pointless discussion.
I also wonder how much of that article came from this guys head, rather than his sources.
