Mike has answered this question perfectly with his comment they will go into fight or flight. Most people have the impression to use a male it is more macho, this is not true, they are stronger suffer less stress and work better. There are police dogs that are female but what are they used for,in Europe a lot of forces have dogs for different uses and bitches are very good at some things but not bite work.

This is what I love about these boards. You disagree with what I have to say based on my experiences, and can't simply say "I disagree" but instead have to resort to personal attacks and swearing.
I agree. It'd be nice to stick to dog training & trash the crap.

Kadi,
Ok I accept that your are limited in knowledge about true service dogs performance. It was not my intention to insult you, as we all were at your level at some point, and I still have a lot to learn.
In this country I have not seen many French Ring dogs that impressed me, but my experience in that area is limited and I also have not seen any in the past five years. I do feel this is a little off the subject but anyway I will go on. I have had a few nice bitches, and I myself have been happy as other have also made the comment to me that they are nice, but the question is not that they are nice bitches, but can bitches do police work. In general the answer is no. Sport work only came as a comparision to it to show there are not many top working bitches in any area of the working dog world, but it does hapen. In general bitches can work in the sport through prey drive, and be good and beat males at the game. But when the game is over and we are talking about the street it is a diffrent matter altogether. I feel that as lI do, I got a little off point but want to make the point that sport and police are two diffrent things in the end, males and bitches are not the same. The fact remains that if you whip a bitch in the legs, sport bitch or not in general the bitch will go in either fight or flight. WIth this said this same female could place in the top ten of it's sport. There is no room for this in police work. THis was the question in the first place. Again it was not my intention to insult you.

Why is it that every response has to be filled with sarcasm and things such as "I have been working dogs longer than you have been alive". My dad has been riding bikes for longer than most cyclists but does that make him more qualified than Lance Armstrong. Hell no. Alot of the reason why males are used has to do with heat cycles AND a macho BS mentality. I have seen many Mal bitches that could do very well as patrol K9s, I am sure. As for nerves, come work my little bitch and tell me she is soft. Ask people like Gary D'Hue if she can take pressure. Ask Glenn Salamanca. Oh he has a nice little bitch, too doesn't he? How about Robert Wademan's bitch Yourie? I have personally worked Kadi's dog Cali. Pressure her and she digs in harder and deeper. I had a GSD that was the same way. Maybe you all are refering to GSD females not being able to cut it. I can show you entire LITTERS of Maligator females that are tough as nails. Contact Kathy O'Brien about her "Extreme Lawsuit" bitch! Ask her about little miss pit aka Diva while you are at it. Saying only males can cut it is no better than saying only GSD can be police dogs. Stupid and closed minded. As for female dogs on patrol. There are a few in AZ. One has a female handler and they make a great team. Guess that's a fluke, too. Hmmm, also reminds me of the only cops can train cop dog comments too. Elitism just tends to make the comments of the poster appear less thought out and more generated from a closed mind. If his comes accross as an attack, I do apologize. The truth is I would like to see folks get into the best pooch for the job not just "what normally is".

I will have to agree, for the military we get several females and they are not as good as the males. HOWEVER, One of the best dogs here is our top breeder and she is a very tough, very solid, female. I would be willing to put her up against most males and see how she stacks up. In fact, she will problably get a chance at the tuscon trials this year.

Ok, You seem upset. The truth is I don't recall anyone saying that there are no bitches out there that can do Police work, and the few that are area fluke. I do believe that there are some great bitches, but as a general rule, most cannot do service work. Most male Mal, or Shep cannot do service work. THe percentage gets lower when you test bitches. This is a fact. YOu may very well have a great bitch, but to say we are stupid, well, that shows how exprienced you are. Again the bitches do exsist, and they are hard to beat, and Machoism does play a role, but stop "screwing the pooch" and telling me that it is only because Men are Macho and bitches get in heat so they are excluded. If that is your feeling then well pass that around, show some bitches biting sleeves and suit jackets hard, and watch K-9 Handlers depend on bitcheds that may cost them thier lives, because as a general rule bitches cannot cut it, and I will agree 1/2 of the service dogs in this country, should not be in service, male or female. It is a fact.

I did not make blanket statements. Go re read what the others have written. I strictly take each dog case by case. I don't say females can't be as tough as the males or any other blanket statement. Simple as that. Angry, no. Dumbfounded, yes. If you read your reply you agree with me. A good dog is a good dog. Plain and simple. Only people get in the way. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

It seems this post has gone off topic...I for one NEVER said there were NO females that could do PSD work. Only that the numbers don't stack up. I do not recall who's post listed a few "tough" sport dogs as well as a PSD here or there, but the numbers just don't stack in your favor. You don't see people having to list off male sport dogs or PSDs. The mere fact you need to find the select group shows they are limited in number. Like I stated before, it is one of the things that Mother Nature has done. Males tend GENERALLY to be the bigger, tougher, stronger, faster, etc etc than females. I had a GREAT KNPV PH1 female. She had enough attitude to do PSD work, but lacked the strength and size. She was only 45-50 pounds wet. I don't think she, despite her love of trying, was fit to fight a full-grown man. She was just too small and light. While some of the dogs you mentioned are great sport dogs, and perhaps, I have never seen them, have the character to do the work, equipment is not people. I think this has gotten off track. The majority of folks here are simply saying...yes it has happened. Yes we know of a few that are. But overall, MOST females do not have it for PSD work....heck MOST dogs from working dog breeding don't have it. the numbers of dogs statistically just don't support the females. I don't think it has much to do w/ macho guy crap..I don't care what color, bloodline, papers, etc etc so long as the dog can do the job for real. I just have never seem many females that can pass my testing for PSD work.

It seems that you are having a problem excepting that like Josh Lewis said the deck is not in you favor. Get real, you can bring your hard bitch out, call so and so, maligator whatever. The rule of thumb and this is what I have heard from all the people here is the bitches don't cut it, and with all rules there are some exeptions and loop holes. But if we took it on a case by case situtation, the bitches would loose out. Heck,, a lot of females cannot do sport work, so stop filling people who are confused with a lot of garbage. As for your Maligators, I have seen some great ones but do not act as if they are the God's save for PSD. Most Mal.s no matter how great they perform, spooked at something. The nerves get to them. ANyone who is truthfull about this will tell this to you. I am not running them down but it is a fact. ALot of them have the drive but the nerves get them. MAligators, get real. The fact that you call them that makes me wonder why I am even writting this???????
