I have seen a few things over the years that I have no other option to classify it as an "instance of cognitive reasoning".
A.) I have seen my old bouv move his bed back into the sun where it was warmer. I personally would never have linked it to thought, but I have read that most dogs NEVER show this type of reasoning. Before reading that I never considered it.
B.) I have watched this GSD push, prod and pull my 7 year old until he put his bobber where the dog thought it should go, and my 7 year old ended up with quite a few fish. Dogs do not have a "fishing instinct" here, to associate the bobber with the fish, OK, but to have thought it out to the point of pushing the kid to put the bobber someplace else, this is something completely different.
I get an occassional oddity with this GSD, but usually if I sit back and think it through, then I end up calling it a fluke. The fishing thing is a little odd though.
If everyone is thinking alike, then someone isn't thinking.
